WE MADE TBO!!! This is the online version of FL's largest paper! http://www2.tbo.com/news/pasco-news/2011/dec/14/menewso3-fervent-followers-lift-paul-to-straw-poll-ar-334587/

Texas Congressman Ron Paul may be polling in the single digits nationally, but his Florida supporters were passionate enough to travel for hours to propel their candidate to a win in Pasco County's first Republican Party straw poll.

Paul's supporters drove from Orlando, Sarasota, even Miami, to the Pasco County Fairgrounds to cast a ballot for their candidate, virtually guaranteeing a win for Paul.

With 171 votes, the Paul campaign more than tripled the showing for second-place candidate Newt Gingrich, who polled at 51. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was a distant third, with 30 votes.

"This is what Ron Paul does all over the state," said Bill Bunting, Pasco's GOP state committeeman. "They're organized and passionate. We had people here from as far away as Volusia County. I think it's unethical, personally."

Longtime Paul supporter Jeff Griffin, who lives in Land O'Lakes, said he ran out of "Ron Paul" stickers after handing out the first 200.

Haha, unethical? There is ethics about driving long distances to show up for a straw poll? That is news to me.

He's right it is unethical. From now on we should keep driving distances no more than 5 miles. And also to be fair we really should set up and staff tables for all the other candidates. And of course next time we should vote in place of those newt and romney supporters who couldn't make it to the poll to be totally sure it's all fair and ethical.

Nice work everyone. Stories like this make people unfamiliar with Ron Paul think:

"Who is Ron Paul and why do people support so strongly to drive so far? He must have something to say."

I hope everyone hears about how far Ron Paul supporters go to support him, it will convince them to at least look into what his message is.

They play up the whole thing of people driving from far away so that they can say that they do not represent Pasco County...

If they wanted it to just be Pasco county voters they would have limited it to Pasco County residents...they got their $10 per ticket did they not?

No, brainiac. I will explain it to you so you can understand. LOL

Straw Polls do not measure popular support, except to some extent indirectly. But they are a damn good measure of a campaign's organization and grassroots commitment. That is what they measure. If you want to have an idea who has the best on the ground campaign in a state, this is what you look at. They are a broader and I think more objective measure than, say, number of offices or volunteers.

If people are getting the word out (organization) and traveling long distances to take part in a paid poll (commitment) far in excess of what other candidates can achieve, that matters a lot . It doesn't mean the candidate will win the state, but it is one valuable metric when trying to ascertain how they'll do on election day.

here ya go from the article.

Kathleen Lusk, a GOP precinct chairwoman from Hudson, said she was wowed by Cain in the early debates and voted for him in the Orlando straw poll. "I was hurt and disappointed" by the revelations of sexual impropriety, she said.
"I wanted someone different, but my backup was always Romney," Lusk said. "I really like his business experience."

So she is from Hudson and drove 100 miles to Orlando to vote for Cain. How unethical! And now she is supporting Romney. I am not sure which is more unethical!

By the way, here is the map from Hudson, FL to Orlando, FL http://g.co/maps/zg8x3

Oh and another by the way, there was also a Senate hopeful who drove ALL THE WAY from Ft. Lauderdale (Miami) to represent his campaign. So yeah, this wasn't just about Pasco residents deciding the president. This was about campaigning for FL politics.
