Romney is towing the neocon line, but he's not exciting anyone. He's also not out there pissing people off. So the strategy works like this:

Pump the hell out of Newt, who many people can't stand. The average Iowan/NH'an GOP voter will go along with whoever the media tells them to. So, right now it's Newt, Newt, Newt. But in reality, Newt has a lot of baggage (and overweight candidates typically don't do well). So the media carries Newt to the Iowa win. Then the media jumps on the Romney bandwagon. Romney becomes very popular among GOP voters because, although he never excited anyone, he looks AMAZING to most people when compared to Newt.

When it looks like Newt may be the nominee after Iowa, and half the GOP voters are disgruntled, you give them Romney and they gladly accept him.

It's very simple tactic that may work.

It's the same reason the most popular player on most football teams is the 2nd-string quarterback. Basic human psychology.

You may be right about the outcome, but you'll drive yourself crazy thinking this is all part of some elaborate plan.

The establishment is not homongeneous. There are many different factions that make up an establishment. Often, these factions compete, but ultimately they are pursuing the same goal.
