But the Jan. 3 caucus date could hinder Paul’s turnout efforts, since students will be home for their holiday break. While most students attending Iowa’s universities reside in the state, almost half of those enrolled at the University of Iowa in Iowa City -- the state’s largest college-- live outside Iowa’s boundaries.

“You’re going to see a lot of his campus supporters diffuse to other states during the holiday,” said one unaligned Iowa Republican official.

Is this wishful thinking or truth?

True. It is one of the issues we have been worried about since they announced the Jan 3rd date. Iwoa Universities and colleges, will still be out for the Holidays. A lot of the students leave the state durring that time, and won't be back by the 3rd. It could hurts us, because Out of state students can vote in Iowa.

Are we seeing any indications that students are being motivated to return to campus early to caucus?

uhh I'm guessing these OOS students weren't included in any of the likely voter polling to begin with. If they were counted I'd guess we'd be around 20-21% instead of 18%

so as far as polling goes it doesn't "hurt" us but it won't help either

What about college students from Iowa who attend out of state schools returning home for the break? It seems like it should more or less even out unless Iowa has a disproportionate number of universities. I suppose those students aren't going to these rallies, etc., but they're still Paul's natural constituency.

Of course that theory didn't really pay off last time around...
