Montgomery County, PA - December 6, 2011 - Local supporters of Presidential candidate, Congressman Dr. Ron Paul, are participating in the nationwide food drive that was rolled out this week to benefit local food banks. This is a grassroots effort not directly affiliated with the official presidential campaign. As their initial goal, the nationwide grassroots food drive hopes to collect over 10,000 pounds of food. Area organizers have selected The Open Line, and the members of the community that they serve, to be the ultimate beneficiaries of their charitable efforts.

Rob Pepe, one of the local organizers, stated, “We selected The Open Line as our beneficiary because of their excellent service, reputation, commitment, and the long standing history they have serving those in need in our community.” He continued, “We all acknowledge that the nation’s economy is in serious trouble, and our friends and neighbors are not immune.”

Unemployment remains high, over 46,000,000 Americans are now receiving food stamps, record numbers of Americans are having trouble making ends meet and provide for their families. These are truly historic times. Frankly, the solutions to the problems that face our communities do not lie in some federal or state government program funded through taxation or borrowing. That is not charity, and ultimately only serves to further erode our economic stability.

Whether fighting for the Constitution, or making the case sound monetary policy, a strong pro-American national defense, or truly free markets devoid of the repeated failures of central economic planning and government coercion, Ron Paul supporters, have been known to spend most of their waking hours spreading the ideals and the philosophy of individual liberty. They are recognized nationally as some of the most dedicated and enthusiastic political activists.

“This holiday season we plan on channeling some of our dedication and enthusiasm to help those in need, right in our own back yards”, said Pepe. “It is in these difficult times that those with the means can, and should, reach out and help those in need through acts of charity.”

“Imagine the programs that constituted the federal “safety net” were all of the sudden abolished [...] How would you respond? Would you be more likely to volunteer at a food bank? [...] If you were a lawyer or physician, would you be more likely to offer pro bono services? We would all answer yes, wouldn’t we? We need to ask ourselves: why aren’t we doing these things already? And the answer is that we have bought into the soul-killing logic of the welfare state: somebody else is doing it for me. I don’t need to, since a few scribbles on a tax form fulfill my responsibility toward my fellow man. Do our responsibilities as human beings really extend no farther than this?” – Dr. Ron Paul, The Revolution: A Manifesto

Donations will be collected starting December 6th through the afternoon of December 23rd. For more information go to www.RonPaulFoodDrive.com or contact the local organizers via email at PA4RonPaul@gmail.com. Thank you!
