New Iowa Poll Has Ron Paul Best Able to Defeat Obama

Paul polls in top three again, fares best vs. Obama

ANKENY, Iowa – Among all competitors for the Republican nomination, 2012 Presidential candidate Ron Paul has the best chance of defeating President Obama in a head-to-head race, according to a new poll.

The NBC News/Marist Poll (http://iowaforronpaul.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=af10358490fc15b52a962f667&id=02e5a3a0bf&e=faeada51fb) has Ron Paul polling in the top three among likely Republican caucus goers. Paul places third with 17 percent behind Mitt Romney in second place and Newt Gingrich in first place with 18 and 26 percent, respectively. Among the larger pool of potential Republican caucus goers, Paul again places third with 16 percent, behind Romney and Gingrich with 18 and 25 percent, respectively.

Paul polling in the top three in Iowa is a conventional outcome, yet the NBC News/Marist Poll reveals some interesting facts about the 12-term Texas Congressman’s competitiveness against Obama:

President Obama defeats all GOP competitors except for Ron Paul in a hypothetical matchup; and

42 percent of registered voters in Iowa support Ron Paul and 42 percent back Obama, with 16 percent undecided; and
Ron Paul leads Obama 42 to 35 percent among independent voters and attracts 15 percent of Iowa’s Democrats; and

Ron Paul also leads Obama by 14 percentage points among voters under 45 years of age.

A Des Moines Register poll (http://iowaforronpaul.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=af10358490fc15b52a962f667&id=2e9b5764a9&e=faeada51fb) released yesterday shows Paul polling a strong second with 18 percent among likely Republican caucus goers, close behind Newt Gingrich who earned 25 percent. With 16 percent of the vote, Mitt Romney was the only other candidate to attract double-digit support.

If we see a few more polls that like this, we have some great ammo against the electability claims.

As for now though, we can't take it too seriously. It will only be considered an outlier.

Good to see the campaign putting this stuff out. Hopefully the media picks it up.

All other candidates are now to be officially considered unelectable. :D

When it comes to positions on key issues, just what are caucus-goers willing to accept in a candidate? 87% of likely Republican caucus-goers believe it is unacceptable for a nominee to tolerate Iran building a nuclear weapon. Eight percent say it is acceptable, and 5% are unsure.

More than eight in ten likely Republican caucus-goers -- 81% -- think it is not acceptable to allow illegal immigrants to obtain in-state tuition. 14% believe it is, and 6% are unsure.

Many likely Republican caucus-goers -- 63% -- find it unacceptable for a GOP nominee to support an individual mandate for health care insurance while more than one in four -- 28% -- do not take issue with that stance. Nine percent are unsure.

A majority of likely Republican caucus-goers -- 56% -- report it is unacceptable for a nominee to have earned millions of dollars advising Freddie Mac. About one-third -- 33% -- find it to be acceptable in a nominee, and 10% are unsure.

A majority of likely Republican caucus-goers -- 54% -- also find it problematic for a nominee to have been accused of sexual harassment. Nearly four in ten -- 38% -- do not think this is problematic, and 8% are unsure.

Likely caucus-goers divide about whether or not it is acceptable for a candidate to support limited amnesty for some illegal immigrants. 47% say it is unacceptable while 46% believe it is acceptable. Seven percent are unsure.

VERY interesting...especially how 63% of voters don't want someone who supports a healthcare mandate, yet Gingrich and Romney combine for 44% of the vote....

Worth noting Paul's numbers are relatively poor when looking at the evangelicals in that poll (for some reason, though, they left Paul out when reporting where self-identified "very conservative" voters fell). Paul also has, by far, the strongest bond with those who said they'd vote for him. No surprise there. By the way, doesn't flaunting Paul vs. Obama polls kind of discredit the argument that attracting Dems is pointless?

The Candidates vs Obama:
Paul 42% - Obama 42% = Tie
Romney 39% - Obama 46% = Obama +7%
Gingrich 37% - Obama 47% = Obama +10%
Perry 37% - Obama 48% = Obama +11%
Cain 32% - Obama 50% = Obama +18%
Bachmann 31% - Obama 54% = Obama +23%

So Ron Paul is well ahead of the next closest contender.
