Do you think we need to eliminate the entire national debt?
I think that would be advisable in the long-run, but obviously that cannot be completed in the short-term. Let us at least begin moving in the right direction by attempting to balance the budget by drastically reducing our spending and our need to borrow money from China and Japan to sustain our bloated expenditures.

If not, how much do we need to reduce it by to ensure sustainable growth?
I think that if we begin paying down our debt rather than increasing it, then that is inherently sustainable. Increasing our debt ad infinitum is inherently unsustainable when trying to retain a stable economy, including global purchasing power and the strength of our currency.

What do you think the government can do to grow the economy in the near term?
The first thing to do would be to immediately halt our international imperialism, saving hundreds of billions per week on the costs of war and occupation, as well as bringing many thousands of working-age veterans back and reintroducing their capital into the economy. This would also allow us to cut our military spending by a great deal as we restore our military to the job it was intended for which is national defense instead of international offense and imperialism.

When does "super inflation" kick in, exactly?
That is largely up to the Federal Reserve. Like Germany in the early 1920's, if we continue to allow the Fed to print more and more money and provide bailouts to American and international corporations alike to bandage our economic woes (instead of letting the market correct itself), the problem of inflation will continue to increase exponentially. Eventually the American people and the global community completely lose faith in the dollar and interest rates are forced to skyrocket and our monetary system will be destroyed.

Which particular Federal Reserve intervention are you referring to in the first paragraph?
Their aforementioned printing of money, thus the devaluing of our currency and the creation of artificial interest rates resulting in unwise investment as well as loose and standardless lending by the banks whose reserves have been artificially inflated.

How does morality possibly enter into your complaints about the size and scope of government?
I'm a little surprised that this question must be asked. Oppression has been exercised throughout history by countless governments that received too much power and grew too large. A more direct answer to your question, and one I'm confident you won't agree with, is that the government arose out of necessity for the individual to protect his right to liberty, his property, and his faculties. The government being a defense of the individual and an extension of the rights of the individual within those bounds, therefore, should morally limit it to those bounds. When the government instead participates in the plundering of one's property (income tax is a good example), or infringes upon one's liberty (by enforcing laws based upon what the government defines as "moral" or "just"), then they have entered into immoral activity that is directly contrary to its role.

What are the most broken government programs and what is broken about them? How did they break?
Social security is the most obvious example, imo. The American people have been deceived into thinking that they are paying in each month to a system that will return their investment within interest to them once they retire. Instead, due to the government's outlandish spending, this money that is being paid in is being used to pay for all sorts of government programs and the program itself will be bankrupt long before I retire, even though I have already spent several years paying into it. Forced involvement in social security is theft in the first place, I believe. But when even the promise of what is being done with our stolen money is violated the brokenness of the program is that much more glaring.

What are the least broken government programs? Should we cut those, too?
Some government programs should be maintained. National Defense, as I talked about above, can be fixed and very safely have their budget greatly diminished while actually increasing its efficacy in its stated and intended purpose.

Can you provide any kind of systematic study or analysis suggesting that welfare programs foster an "entitlement mentality"?
I don't know of any specific studies, no. But I do understand that capitalism, which is the economic ideology of the incentive system and the opposite of the socialist welfare system, has been able to produce economies such as the US economy throughout much of the 20th century that not only produced an insane GDP and an unheard of standard of living but also lead the world in innovation and technology. I also can observe the behavior around me which suggests as people become less and less driven by financial incentive and more and more by the expectation of handouts they become less productive and less fulfilled. I know many people who actually boast about working under the table while exploiting the unemployment system. I also know many more people who think that any job outside of their college major, or any job that doesn't pay spectacularly, or any job that does not offer 40 hrs./week is "beneath" them. As the entitlement mentality becomes more prevalent, so do these attitudes and these behaviors.

Can you even define "entitlement mentality?"
I believe it sort of defines itself, but I'll try to word it another way. The health of a capitalistic economy is dependent upon the people within it having ambition for success according to one's own abilities and confidence in the possibility that that success is attainable with enough effort and perseverance. When the inferred message (as inferred by a large portion of the population) from the government of a so-called capitalistic society is that effort and ambition are not required to sustain oneself, but rather that they may exist and sustain themselves according to the effort and ambition of others by the usurpation of said others' property, then the "entitlement mentality" has been arrived at.

Why didn't welfare reform and other spending cuts in the 1990s counteract that mentality (or do you think they did)?
I believe that the welfare reform act especially was a step in the right direction, but the system is still seriously overblown.

Why didn't the recent deluge of cuts to state and local governments counteract that mentality (or do you think they did)?
If the system is still such that it can be easily exploited by people who do not want to work then that mentality is still going to prevail.

What do you mean when you say welfare programs cause class warfare? Do you mean the rich hate paying for them and so they vilify the poor? Or if the poor are attacking the rich, what does welfare possibly have to do with it?
If I took a twenty out of your wallet without your permission and gave it to some dude you had never met would you not feel a hint of resentment toward the recipient of your hard-earned money? The recipient of this money, since he does not carefully consider or appreciate its source, at the same time feels resentment toward the very person his welfare is coming from since his wealth is so much greater than his own.

Contrast this with the traditional and much healthier, imo, standard practice of care for the poor, unemployed, disabled, or otherwise disadvantaged being supplied by the family, church, or community. In that case, the contributor gives his money out of compassion and care for the disadvantaged, so obviously he feels the opposite of resentment. And the recipient of the wealth knows its source and shows gratitude and appreciates it. This is the way in which philanthropy most effectively exists and in the way that most effectively promotes understanding between the classes.

Or how about being able to vote for a runner up choice?
As a person who firmly believes that every voter should vote upon principle, this would only be appropriate if you sincerely agree with "runner up choice" in their positions and would support them as the leader of your country.

Like you wanted to vote for a third party candidate, but as you know his odds arent good you get to vote for a runner up, like a Republican or Democrat. If people who voted for Nader and other third party candidates during the 04 election were allowed to do this it would have helped Kerry a lot.
This whole supposition is that a person votes for somebody because they think he can win a victory for his party. This is such a disappointing, though prevailing, way for our country to look at political decisions. However, your suggestion would be at least a step in the right direction of allowing us more than two (typically) very similar candidates to choose between.

It would probably give people more confidence to vote when they wouldn't have otherwise.
In what way, and among whom?

On the negative side it would make counting votes more difficult, and it's already a convoluted mess. If the counting of votes is a convoluted and erroneous system, that is absolutely not the reason to avoid reforming the choices a voter has.
