VINTON, Iowa --- Ron Paul's unique take on foreign policy drew plenty of applause at a campaign stop Friday in Vinton.

The Texas Congressman has been riding a spike in some polls this week. He's in a virtual tie with Herman Cain, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich in a Bloomberg poll and in second place behind Cain in an Iowa State University/Cedar Rapids Gazette poll.

Paul supports ending all current wars and putting a stop to foreign aid.

Speaking before about three dozen people at the Pizza Ranch, Paul transitioned from economic discussion to foreign policy by saying the easiest way to cut government spending would be to stop aid and wars overseas. He noted the Soviet Union overextended itself outside its borders and let its economy rot.

Many in the audience were Ron Paul supporters who have heard him speak in person already several times this caucus season. But some were still looking around, trying to find the right fit in a candidate.

Chris Reid, of Vinton, is leaning toward Paul in the caucuses. He likes Paul's foreign policy ideas and thinks the United States needs to take care of its own problems before thinking about sending aid and military force around the glove.

Reid's wife, Liz, usually considers herself a liberal but has been disillusioned in recent years and is opening up to other ideas. She liked some of what Paul had to say and plans on learning more.
