Check out this important article: http://boingboing.net/2011/11/11/stop-sopa-save-the-internet.html

Or at least watch the video:

If this bill passes, the government could block any site just for one infringing link. Sites like Youtube, Twitter and Facebook would have to censor their users or get shut does because they become liable for everything their users post.

Ordinary users could go to jail for 5 years for posting any copyrighted work - even just singing a pop song!

Visit http://americancensorship and write your local representative. It's really easy and doesn't take long. The future of the Internet depends on it. Stop SOPA, Save The Internet!

This is extremely disturbing. Anyone who wants something removed can just "copyright" it. I tried to watch a video of Herman Cain losing his thought process during the debates a couple of days ago (I missed the debate). The first youtube video I found had been removed due to "copyrighted content". Of course that is insignificant compared to the impact this will have on our main form of communications. How about any "copyrighted" images or videos posted on these forums? Will the site have to shutdown if it can't remove them all within some period of time? I believe this kind of legislation is exactly how non-violent attempts to reform the system will be defeated. Just quietly block or shutdown any type of opposition.

Scary stuff.

Youtube, Facebook or Twitter will most likely not be blocked. What will most likely be blocked is alternative sites that don't have political clout.

That's the point. Imagine a world where only government/corporate-approved sites exist.

They want the power to shut down any site they want, but first they need an excuse. With this bill, they could find an excuse to shut down just about any site they don't like. This is a very serious issue. Even a site like RonPaulForums could be shut down under these rules. Spread the world!

but youtube would become more aggressive in blocking content.

The thing about Copyright Infringement is that the ones complaining are the Middlemen, the Publishers.

Publishers are the Real Copyright Infringers. With the existence of the Internet, the need for Publishers and Middlemen has come and gone. This law is both a way for the Middlemen to try to retain some of their importance, however it also excessively abuses the individual for acquiring content that the content producer wants everyone to have, in exchange for being reasonably compensated. When a person is fined for Copyright Infringement, it usually happens in Civil Court, but the Middlemen are the ones that collect on the fines imposed, not the Content Creator, if they can collect anything from the accused at all.

This is also a direct violation of "Due Process of Law" where proof does not have to be presented in order for the person or business to be deprived of their property. But it doesnt stop there. The rulings that occur in Civil Court can also violate 8th Amendment of Excessive Bail, Excessive Fines, or Cruel or Unusual Punishment".
