Samaras made his comments after Papandreou briefed Greek President Karolos Papoulias of his plan for a multi-party government that would implement the rescue package devised by European leaders late last month, the Journal said.

“I will do whatever I can to help form a coalition government. The Oct. 26 decisions and obligations stemming from this are a condition for the country remaining in the euro,” Papandreou reportedly said, also in nationally-televised remarks.

The prime minister survived a confidence vote in parliament after pledging to form a new coalition government aimed at winning broader public support for a bailout package for Greece, according to reports late Friday.

Papandreou used the vote, held early Saturday in Athens, to call for general elections as early as February. The 59-year-old leader is not expected to head the new interim government, which reports have said could be led by Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos.

so much for sovereignty, and a warning to all nations.

It will lead to a referendum anyway, only an unofficial one, expressed through the Greek public's continuing street protests, confrontations with politicians, site occupations and the like. The PM is apparently stepping down, in further punishment over his temerity in suggesting the bankers' money deal be subject to an official election.
