One U.S. veteran of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan attempts suicide every 80 minutes, according to new study.

In a staggering indictment on the lack of mental health programmes in the U.S. military, the report reveals 1,868 veterans made suicide attempts in 2009 alone.

We will never, ever know the true price of this war. How many lives have been ruined/traumatized. It's sickening.

Unfortunately this article does not deal with one of the main causes of these suicides, which is the widespread prescriptions of anti psychotic drugs for dealing with PTSD that has sky rocketed, and which have side effects that include suicide: http://healthimpactnews.com/2011/war-vets-turn-to-organic-farming-for-mental-health-instead-of-drugs/

I saw that on LRC (http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/98061.html) this morning. Are we the only ones in Amerika who actually support the troops by wanting to end these insane, endless wars? It seems like the bifactional ruling party and their political Stockholm Syndrome victims just want to keep abusing them. They come home utterly traumatized, and toss them aside like rotten meat. (And why is it when it comes to cutting, they always go after the oldsters and the vets first?)

This is a statistic without any context which is kind of meaningless.

Suicide is a major, preventable public health problem. In 2007, it was the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S., accounting for 34,598 deaths.1 The overall rate was 11.3 suicide deaths per 100,000 people.1 An estimated 11 attempted suicides occur per every suicide death.

21.8 million - The number of military veterans in the United States in 2010.

So in the general population just more than 1 in 10,000 people attempt suicide. And in the veteran population less than 1 in 10,000 people attempt suicide. So veterans are LESS likely to commit suicide than non-veterans.

One of my best friends in Austin tried to kill himself twice. The first time he took a bunch of pills and woke up two days later and the second time he tried to hang himself and he ended up passing out and waking up with a sore neck. This was two months after we got home. He couldn't find a job and he was having a hard time at school. One thing that he told me was that struck me was "I've been in since I was seventeen and I'm I get out and I am 23 sitting in this school with these 18 year olds and I feel left behind. I can't even relate to these dumb fucks. Once you see the world for what it is you can never go back. Things will never be the same." When you stare death in the face on a daily basis you tend to figure out what's bullshit and what's not. Sad to say he is only one of three people I know in the service that has committed suicide. The other two didn't make it.

21.8 million US veterans, but this study is just Iraq & Afghan war vets. I do not know how those numbers will compare, but I am just pointing this out.

This is just not true. I don't know where you get the 21.8 million figure from, but that certainly is not combat troops and those suffering from PTSD. It is this group that has a very high suicide rate. See: http://www.thenewstribune.com/2011/05/26/1680716/concern-grows-over-epidemic-veteran.html

WASHINGTON – With veterans now accounting for one of every five suicides in the nation, the Department of Veterans Affairs is under pressure from both the courts and Congress to fix its mental-health services in an attempt to curb the death toll.

“The suicide rate is out of control – it’s epidemic proportions right now,” said Paul Rieckhoff, executive director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. “There are very few programs that are effective, and there’s a serious lack of national awareness.”

If you have ever seen the depths of the ineptness that is the VA system firsthand used to 'treat' those who bore the burden of war this should come as no surprise. The main goal of the VA system is to preserve the employment of those who cannot or do not want to compete in the real world for a job... War is Hell, so why do we keep perpetuating the warfare State. The reality is that any war creates a whole new generation of psychologically dependents who at best will be stabilized with heavy meds and welfare dependency for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, in an effort to ramp up recruitment the military accepted mental fringe individuals and war was the tipping point for them never to be able to be a productive member of society ever again. 60 minutes should do a special on the inner workers of the VA... It would open some eyes and make people think twice about rushing into war. There's a reason Ron Paul advocates privatizing the VA and ending the war continuum.

I wish people would quit voluntarily joining the military.
