I shamelessly post this Houston Chronicle story merely for this quote:

Paul placed higher

The Texas governor made his first Sunday talk show appearance of the campaign on the day a new Des Moines Register poll showed him tumbling into a tie for fifth in the first state to select presidential convention delegates. Perry received the backing of just 7 percent of likely Republican caucus goers, placing him well behind Georgia businessman Herman Cain (23 percent) and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (22 percent).

The top Texan in the race, Lake Jackson congressman Ron Paul, was the White House favorite of 13 percent of Iowans. Perry was tied for fifth with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, one percentage point behind Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann.
