Afghan Insurgents Kill 13 U.S. Troops in Car Bomb

KABUL—A Taliban insurgent driving a vehicle packed with explosives slammed into a U.S. military convoy in Kabul on Saturday, killing at least 13 Americans inside an armored vehicle, according to Western officials and eyewitnesses in Afghanistan.

The midday attack, which also killed at least four Afghans, was believed to be the deadliest strike on American forces in the relatively secure Afghan capital in a decade of war.

"It's a shock," U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker told a small group of reporters at the embassy minutes after learning of the death toll. "It makes you mad. It makes me angry. We are not going to let these guys win."

The Kabul bombing was the worst in a series of attacks across Afghanistan on Saturday, showcasing the insurgency's resilience despite recent coalition assertions of reversing the war's momentum.

In the southern Uruzgan province, an Afghan army officer opened fire on his Western comrades, killing three Australian soldiers and an Afghan interpreter, according to the U.S.-led coalition and Western officials.

It also is noticeable that U.S. Ambassador there had a more appropriate response than one he gave last month after 14 people were killed in another deadly attack in Kabul.

US embassy attack in Kabul 'no big deal': ambassador

(AFP) – Sep 14, 2011

KABUL — United States ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker said Wednesday that his embassy was hit with six grenades in a Taliban attack, but played down the insurgents' raid as "not a very big deal".

The attack launched on Tuesday lasted for 19 hours and left 14 people dead in a barrage of gunfire and suicide blasts targeting the US embassy and the neighbouring headquarters of NATO-led troops in Afghanistan.

Thanks for this post. I had forgotten that guy who told the truth for once. "14 people dead? Not a big deal." They don't care.

As a soldier, and someone who may very well have to go over there, it makes me demoralized! I mean we have to go over there and not know who the enemy is, and wait to be shot at to figure out who it is? This war is exactly why I'm not re-enlisting and have become very anti-war. The elitists don't give a crap about our troops or their families, they deserve to burn in hell for what they've done :mad:

Drastically different first reactions of Afghan President and US Ambassador in Kabul after killing of Afghans and Americans in two major recent attacks in Kabul paint the picture of a dysfunctional relationship after a decade of war that seems to worsen with every passing day.

In a sign of the continued tensions between Americans and their Afghan allies, President Hamid Karzai issued a statement condemning the Kabul attack, but did not note the loss of American military lives. “The enemies of Afghanistan carried out a dastardly and cowardly attack that caused sorrow for some Afghan families,” he said.

Previously, Afghan President had threatened to join Taliban over civilian killings by NATO and stand against US in case of any US-Pakistan war.

Its hard to get funding for a war against terrorism if the terrorist aren't terrorizing.

The military machine will stop at NOTHING!

The cost to re-tool those machines to make plows would be astronomical.

So, let me get this straight. We're currently in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban and Al Qaeda, yet it comes out the U.S. armed the former and just gave Libya to the latter. And Americans don't seem to care. Tragic.

That is pretty much our schizophrenic checkers game of a foreign policy that is sometimes glorified as a "chess game".

If Talibans are not the enemy per se, what did neocons and their plant Obama achieve during last two years war escalation that got over a thousand troops killed and many more left with body injuries? How much compensation money is Obama paying to Afghan families for each Afghan civilian killed/injured?

Afghan president welcomes US remarks that Taliban not necessarily America’s enemy

“Look, the Taliban per se is not our enemy. That’s critical. There is not a single statement that the president has ever made in any of our policy assertions that the Taliban is our enemy because it threatens U.S. interests,” Biden was quoted as saying by Newsweek.

The Obama administration and other governments are trying to establish a peace process with the Taliban to help end the 10-year war.

Begging Talibans to join peace talks after getting all these troops killed sends a message of weakness.
