I'd be very surprised if Obama's puppet masters or NATO wanted to take him alive and probably directed militants to target kill him. Legal trials of living Gaddafi afterwards could have opened a Pendora's box bringing into question legality of US/NATO funding Al-Qaeda linked Libyan rebels.
