I keep hearing mention that Herman Cain has put his money ($1M) where his mouth is regarding the abortion issue, example:

hxxp://www.redstate.com/leon_h_wolf/2011/10/21/a-mea-culpa-on-herman-cain-and-abortion/

So I decided to do a little digging and have thus far found NO evidence that Cain gave ANY money for these ads. The ads appear to have been paid for by America's PAC, a 527 Group... which I believe can accept no more than $1000 /yr from individual donors (?). I couldn't find data from the FEC site but I did find some here: http://projects.publicintegrity.org/527/profile-pf.aspx?act=dir&sub=3&cycle=2004&id=728

Life News (http://www.lifenews.com/2006/09/13/nat-2583/) claimed that America's PAC was a Cain-backed organization, I think he just lent his name to the PAC. $900,000 seems to have come from (through) J. Patrick Rooney and the 'Republican Leadership Coalition' and as for the rest, I haven't been able to connect any of the money to Cain.

Could you guys double check this?

Edit: I mixed up dates... I guess he re-ran the ads in 2006. That being said, the article I've seen cited says it was still paid for through Americas PAC and questions still remain.

Edit 2: Especially given that his personal financial report does not include contributions to America's PAC http://www.opensecrets.org/news/HermanCainMoney.xls

Edit 3: Contributions to America's PAC 2006 http://www.opensecrets.org/527s/527cmtedetail_contribs.php?cycle=2006&ein=760725241

Mod: could you change year in the thread title to 2006?

Here's a article with more info. I'm not sure what you're looking for.

This article helps... fundraising seems to have gone down the same way as in 2004, confirming my suspicions.

There is a BIG difference between contributing $1M of your own money and lending your name to a cause. Right now, people are claiming that he donated his own money, which would give him big cover for his recent flubs on abortion. The facts seem to indicate otherwise.
