a blast from the past:

Ed Thompson, Galileo, and Jesus

Jan 3, 2003

....

All three, at a high point in their lives were involved in an important feast, which later was followed by an unjust arrest. Jesus drank wine with his disciples at the Last Supper, then was arrested for claiming to be King of the Jews. Galileo was honored with a sumptuous feast in Rome in 1611, where the glories of his telescope and his fabled book Messenger From the Stars were celebrated, then was arrested in 1633 for claiming the earth moved around the sun. And Ed, celebrating the lifting of himself out of poverty, held his first annual Thanksgiving meal in Tomah in 1994, for the people who did not have their own family to be with that day. Ed was arrested in 1997 at his employee Christmas party during the now infamous Raid, because he paid out on some nickel poker machines.

Despite their arrests, all three are very popular. And despite their popularity, all three have been betrayed by a close friend. Jesus had crowds cheering him on Palm Sunday, but was betrayed by disciple Judas Iscariot, for 30 pieces of silver. Galileo was the most famous man in the world during his lifetime, but was betrayed by friend and admirer Pope Urban VIII. The Pope sanctioned Galileo’s arrest when Galileo said the earth moved around the sun. And Ed was cheered at all his campaign appearances, but was betrayed by the Tavern League who didn’t endorse him, even though Ed was their star member.

The third area of similarity is more abstract and not yet complete. All three initially attracted unpopular outsiders because they fought the establishment, but ended up being mainstream. Jesus’ first followers were described as poor outcasts and tax resistors, yet Jesus began the biggest religious movement of world history, Christianity. Galileo’s first followers were described as cranks and dabblers in occult, yet Galileo created the scientific method and began the greatest cultural movement of history, the Scientific Revolution. Now people who disagree with Galileo are perceived as cranks. And Ed, initially very popular with tax resistors, drinkers and smokers, has moved the political philosophy of Libertarianism, to a position close to the mainstream. All the homeowners with Ed signs on their property are a testament to that.
