View Full Version : WAPO blog: Ron Paul's suit "at least two sizes too big."

Ron Paul’s suit jacket: The Fix is, admittedly, a bit of a clotheshorse. But, anyone who has ever worn a suit could see that the Texas Congressman’s coat was at least two sizes to big. The ill-fitting coat made Paul look tiny, never a good image to project when you are running for president.

I really don't understand why he can't go to a decent tailor. IMAGE MATTERS in politics. In fact it is probably the only thing that matters.

Yes. This is a fair criticism.

Seriously. We've been complaining about this for years. Why doesn't he do something about it?

I think it's time to start a New Suit Bomb.

This has to be something to do with Paul's stubbornness. There is no way in hell someone in the campaign hasn't realized this and tried to change it.

it might just be me, but I dont really notice it until somebody else whos watching him with me points it out...

his thinking is at another level.. maybe somebody needs to run it by him just in case

Meh. I love him for his ideas, not his clothes.

maybe its his lucky suit; clearly he likes it. although he does have some real nice fitting ones nowadays.

Ron Paul should just stop wearing suits altogether and show up in a flannel shirt, blue jeans, and a straw hat.

His suits are tailored, RP is just a small guy with not the best posture at a podium.

I actually noticed it last night but it is an easy fix. If he gets a new suit he'll be fine on this

Alot of it is, Paul leans forward, especially in debates. That makes the suit ride up on his neck.

Or with a doctors jacket and scrubs. Rand did that interview or a few in scrubs....worked out well for him.

He apparently likes the suit or he would wear a different one.

That article was the worst spin piece I've seen this month. What a load of crap. The rest of them argued and bickered like a bunch of grade school kids and Ron rose above it all and was presidential.

Agreed on the suit issue. I keep thinking when I watch these debates that Paul wins hands down if people vote for substance, but he doesn't win at all if people want a smooth actor. Unfortunately, most people want the best actor, not the best man, for president. I do wish Paul would put a little more effort into public image stuff like that (change the suit in particular). As much as I hate how most people vote, that's just the way it is. Romney just blathers on about nothing (seriously, I can't even name one point of substance he has ever said), but he's a smooth talker with nice hair, so he gets the votes.

Get a fvcking tailor!!! Hell, I'll donate another $75 dollars if he promises to use it to tailor his damn suit for the next debate. It's kinda sad this sort of thing matters, but it is what it is, and it's an easy, cheap fix. Come on...

+1 to freejack's "New Suit Bomb" idea.

To me it makes him more of an every man. He has heard it from supporters and the media that his clothes aren't fashionable and yet he still wears what he owns.

If you are going to claim to take the salary of an average American ($39,000), you don't go out and buy suits just because you lost weight (or whatever) and the ones you have are a bit big. You use what you got.

Perhaps there is a subliminal message he is trying to convey.

I could care less what he wears - I have had it with the pretty boys and their lies.

Best to have a large suit for the day when, like all POTUSes, Ron has to start wearing a bullet-proof vest.

And my own talior says the clothes do not, in fact, make the man.

Ron doesn't care for "superficial" stuff, just as MSM doesn't care for his message

I appeal to Carol. PLEASE!!!

edit: Honestly, though, I don't think it is the suit not fitting as much as his posture. His suit looked find at the last debate when he was sitting.

His suits are tailored, RP is just a small guy with not the best posture at a podium. He's not that small. I was chatting with him in Vegas on Monday, he's definitely taller than I am.

I'm 5'10", so he's at least 6'.

He is broad shouldered and narrow waisted. I cannot find an off the rack suit to fit. I take a 42 in jacket to fit the shoulders, which they want to sell me a 36 waist with that and I have a 30 inch waist. As well any alterations are so the coat fits the waist and the pants that came with the suit lose their proper drape of material due to the amount of cloth tucked, darted or pulled. A tailor cannot necessarily fit a suit like a glove. It takes a special talent and several fittings. I have seen Ron wear some really sharp suits that fit to a tee. I think folks should stop complaining.

Folks are complaining because it does matter. It would be nice to be able to change reality, but if you are going to play the political game, you need to play the game. A lot of stupid political stuff is avoidable, but this is something that people notice and doesn't require any type of sacrifice of principles. Be steadfast on the issues, not a stubborness over a suit.

I noticed last night on twitter that a lot of people commented on this including those who said they really liked his ideas- stuff like "Ron Paul is the only sane guy up there, but why is his suit so big?" Many of us are blind to this stuff because we are supporters and we are a lot more into politics and political substance than the people who actually choose the President.

I understand that he dose have a tailor. Its apparent that he needs to bring a podium to the fittings. I think he may need some Ninja tailor from NYC, maybe a higher cut in the back of the neck and a serious taper down the back to get it over his substantial shoulders. Perhaps someone into the scene could network around and find a ninja tailor that can ID what is going on with his stature at the podium and make a referral.

not all are, or at least, not all tailoring is equal. I think he bought a couple new suits when we made such a stink, but with so many debates in a row also has the 'don't want to wear the same thing too often' issue and recycled the old ones.

not same build. See picture in pool, above. Ron has shoulders. I think that is part of the issue, because it lifts a poorly tailored coat away from his neck and makes him look like he is swimming in the coat.

Ron Paul could wear NOTHING but that kinky painted on latex stuff that some folks like to have sex in, I'm still going to give him a hundred bucks after work and campaign for him.

You nailed it Ben, and I'm kinda tired of everyone refuting these points by arguing "That would be compromising, leave him alone", it's not compromising to try and look your best, as someone else pointed out if that is the case why does he even wear a suit at all, I'm sure sweatpants and t-shirt would be more comfy.

I love that look on him! I modeled an outfit or two after it :)

Also, someone should ask him why he likes that suit so much. As a couple people have suggested, it could have very well been a gift from Carol or someone else important to him. I have a giant ass sweater I wear on occassion that I keep around because it was a gift from someone close to me.

Haha. Well, not too much can be done there - he's got metal in his knees, so he needs comfortable shoes.

But the suit... He probably just says something like "I'm not throwing away a perfectly good suit! Don't you fellas have some Constitution to read?"
