At a more fundamental level, Paul's proposal to cut about $1 trillion in federal spending has some critics complaining that he would send the U.S. economy into another tailspin. That deficit spending may cost future generations dearly, but at the moment it's keeping a lot of people employed and providing a lot of services.

There you have it, this guy is more than willing to sell younger generations into slavery for his own generations benefit.

Exactly. No one is considering the short-term benefit vs. the long-term benefit.

I wish the consequences of the reckless spending could be consigned to "future generations". Talk like that just shows how clueless these people are. We are paying for it NOW and things are only going to get worse in the immediate future.

The basic question posed by Rep. Ron Paul's candidacy is: "Why do we have a federal government?"

I don't really like the wording here. It would be more accurate to say his question is "What is the proper role of the federal government?"

It is worse than that. There is NO short-term benefit. Not on net. When the debt ceiling was raised, the market so through our folly, equities crashed, and the recovery faltered. The benefits will come once we are also on a long-term trajectory towards solvency. What the politicians are doing is treading water. It only benefits a few, the elite power brokers. We are worse off with every debt ceiling raise or unbalanced budget.

Thank you, someone that understands.

We can provide "alternatives" all day long, which will give us positive results immediately (that's what a stimulus is for).

Or we can just do it the right way, and ensure sustainability via decades/centuries.

This is why the Constitution condemned indirect tax (federal income tax), because federal income tax is one major contributor as to why the Fed. Govt. has grown so large and expensive. It has grown beyond its means, because this piece of the constitution was a huge filter to preventing this scenario from occurring in our nation's history.
