Look at all the purple!!

The Republican presidential candidates released their fundraising totals this week--Rick Perry raised $17 million; Mitt Romney, $14 million--so one map-making journalist posed the question: where in the country is that money coming from? Matt Stiles, a data journalist at NPR, traces the geographic source of each campaign dollar contributed to the eight main players in the GOP field using public Federal Election Commission records and made a map of his results, posted on his personal blog, The Daily Viz (where you can also find a larger version of the map above, as well as maps for each individual candidate).

The results are fascinating. For one thing, it mirrors the patterns in NASA's satellite images of the United States at night (places with a lot of lights also have a lot of money). But it also shows the regional fundraisng machines that are supporting the primary candidates: you can see Perry's fundraising stronghold in Texas, Romney's deep financial roots in Utah as well as Southern California, where he's supersizing his beach-front home (although very little from Massachusetts where he was governor), and even Michele Bachmann's home turf in the Minneapolis area and Newt Gingrich's Georgia stomping grounds are lit up. The Internet-fueled Ron Paul, however, is an exception: the appeal of his brand of libertarianism doesn't seem to be geographically limited as he took donations from all over.

I wish when you clicked on the names it would show one candidate at a time, or two at a time or whatever.

God Bless Ron Paul. Just look at that map, and look at the other candidates maps. I honestly believe this polls have to be rigged, look at the support....

Dear Leader:

UPDATE: Added a map for President Obama, who’s raised about $86 million this year. This map uses a different method than above. Instead of created symbols sized by the number of donors in a zip code, it creates a tiny dot for each $2,500 collected in a zip code. (So don’t compare it to the GOP maps, which I plan to update soon):

Romney dominate in Utah and Cain in GA? Shocker.

Interesting how you see people on the seacoast are more apt to donate and people on the Northeast are more exclusively Ron Paul supporters. Also it looks like America is split right down the middle on who actually gives a flying **** about politics. Shame on you mid-west...

Funny how Rick Perry supporters are all pretty much in major illegal alien crossing points.

Another cool tool would be a comparison of contribution sources. Military would be one of them, but self-employed, corporate, etc could be others...

I especially like that Paul's map is just in front of Rick (dontgoogleme) Santorum's to show the disparity.

The proper thing to say would be;

Santorum isn't very popular, in the United States, surprise!

Also, did anyone notice that Perry, Romney, and Cain only got a majority of its donations from their home areas?

Cain = South-East/Georgia
Perry= South-Central/Texas
Romney = East/New York

Ron Paul = Dispersed Everywhere.

This leads me to believe, that those which support other candidates only view those politicians as their home-town favorite. Similar to how people root for their home-team in Football. Most people rarely have any real input, or think for themselves in regards to politics. Seeing this map disparity, in my opinion, confirms that these people are just supporting their local team because that's all they really know.

Notice all the homering going on? Perry in TX, Cain in Atlanta, Bachmann in Minn, Santorum in Penn, Romney in Mormon country and CT...Obama in Democratic strongholds (no small cities). Dr Paul is all over the map.....literally.

Dude, there are under a million people in the whole state, and it ranks 48th in the US for population density.
If every single person in the state donated, it probably still wouldn't show up.
