I am having this debate with someone and he basically said that no one has ever become a millionaire through doing business with the government (US and UK)...I'm sure he's very wrong in this regard and would like to shove it in his face.

I've found some billlionaires but they have made most their money through the free market. I was wondering if there were any specialist ones that made most of their money through government contracts...

Companies that provide services such as janitors and builders for bases make a TON of money. T he thing is about that to is i actual support this over having the government themselves try and provide it.

Jay Gould? (not necessarily government contracts), but almost all of those robber barons of the Gilded Age made their fortune through crony capitalism.

Really? Then where does the 3.7 trillion the Federal Government spends go? How much is one tank? 20,000,000 Million? No millionaires at Northrop Grumman? General Electric? L3 Communications? Solyndra (HA!)? Monsanto? I mean, just go down the Fortune 500 list.

Jeez.. almost any business with government contracts should have at least one person working for it or owning it (executives, managers, shareholders, etc.) who's a millionaire. This doesn't even account for the people who become wealthy due to regulations and legislation that grant them -- or the business they are involved with -- economic privileges.

Who owns the company that sells all the toilets installed in the government buildings in Washington D.C.? Notice he/she got wealthy from being shit on by the government. Paradox?

How many computers were sold to the government over the years? Who made money from that? IBM? Microsoft?

George W Bush's made his money thru the power of theTexas GOVERMENT, via the the Texas Rangers baseball team. Extra sales tax on the people, gigantic property tax break, etc.

The story is facinating & it amazes me how many Conservatives are unfamiliar with it.

Maybe someone can post the details on here.

Don't forget about all those who profit from the "war on drugs"..
There are many millionaires on both sides of that fence.

Someone/group made $18 million redesigning one website. Not much went into it but man hours.

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2009/07/18m-being-spent-to-redesign-recoverygov-web-site/

Funny, ok sad part: http://blog.recovery.gov/2011/08/22/what-would-you-do-to-make-recovery-gov-better/

They ask what they can do to make their site better and only get one comment.

*FLUSH*

I'm also notably disappointed in Google this morning. They are playing with political searches in their auto complete search results.

When I used to start typing into the search box the terms: "18 million dollar website" - I used to only have to type 18 million and it would offer an auto complete of the full phrase I was really looking for. I remember pulling this story up multiple times by going to google first and not having to type but two or three words before the autocomplete came up with what I wanted.

NOW it won't come up til I have typed all the way "18 million dollar we" and even then it offers "18 million dollar wedding" above the "18 million dollar website" result.

Google is ranking Kardashian news over the best news stories of government ineptness.

Even if I type Obama 18 Million, it doesn't offer me website as the last keyword, instead it throws you off by autocompleting "Obama 18 million votes"

Fuckers.
