A California assemblywoman on a quest to end raves was surprised to find that electronic dance music could not be outlawed. Democratic Assemblywoman Fiona Ma tried to ban the music after a 15-year-old girl died at The Electric Daisy Carnival in Los Angeles, apparently from an ecstasy overdose.

“We found out later on that, constitutionally, you can not ban a type of music,” she told Reason.TV.

In January, Ma introduced legislation to the California legislature, the Anti-Raves Act of 2011, that would have made conducting an event that includes prerecorded music and lasts more than three and one-half hours a misdemeanor offense with a $10,000 penalty.

But Ma suggested that as part of that threat assessment, state agencies could prohibit events from allowing people to bring items typically associated with the rave culture, such as LED gloves and pacifiers.

“I believe with the new secretary, the new people appointed to these boards, more sophistication in terms of what raves are, the safer they will be,” Ma said. “Can’t wear gloves with lights, you can’t walk around with stuffed animals.”

"Because telling you how to live and what to wear is our Right!", said Democratic Assemblywoman Fiona Ma

I do 3D/SFX/compositing/concept art. I live in the North Georgia mountains. Happily. I could live in LA, make about 80 bucks and hour and never run out of work.. But I spent six months in Berkeley in 03 and I have never been so frustrated with a bunch of PC do-gooder shit in my born days. I not only had to smoke outside in an office I was the only one in in the middle of the night, but I had to stand at minimum 20 yards away from the entrance..or the people on the second floor and the ones with a back entrance 150 yards away would complain to the fellow who offered me use of his offices. You would mention Star Trek and some idiot would go off on militarism, like you could send a frakkin' VW bus of hippies to explore the galaxy. Bubba may not be too bright around these here parts but he is a hell of a lot easier to talk to because he has some salt of the earth common sense and categorizes thing more aptly.

Do you know where your teenager is at 5 a.m.? The After Hours Club, looking for drugs, dirty dancing and pounding techno music.

Instead of banning "electronic" music, maybe they should try banning ecstasy.

I've lived in California for 22 years and I hate it more and more with every passing day. I wish I could afford to move.

I laughed and cried while reading that article.
I laughed at how unbelievably and absolutely moronic and brain-dead this... thing called Fional Ma is...
I cried because its real....

With the cost of living in CA, how can you afford not to move? (I know, you'd need employment in another state, but you know what I mean). I lived there for ten years and am glad that I got out early.

Do they put something in the water? Of course banning a genre of music is in violation of the Constitution.

ESCAPE from CALIFORNIA - Here is how...

Be an escort (pilot car) for Over dimensional truck loads. It requires zero experience, a dependable vehicle, flags, lights, banner, and a weekend course certificate($500+/-). If you need money to move out of that collectivist infested place this would do it. expect to sleep in your car at truck stops but expect to profit after fuel, wear and tear, and food around $750-$1500 plus/minus a week. Some of the truck stops will provide free showers if you fuel up there. Otherwise its $10.

Real life example: I paid an escort company $3200 to go from Chicopee,Mass to Houston,TX (about 1900 miles via oversize route). One escort went to whole way, his bill was $2865. The other escort was only needed in Mass and Connecticut $335. The escort typically gets around 90% of the fee. This job took 6 days. Long runs are the way to go if you want to make money. Small 200-300 miles runs will have you sitting and waiting for loads. The down side is that you may be on the road for 3+ weeks before you get back. If you live cheap at home, take 3 weeks off for activism when you get back.

This is a viable way for anyone to make money, but it'll be done from the road - not at home. No whiner's aloud. Most driveers sleep in their cars -- motel too expensive. Minivans are perfect.

My point: No one has a valid excuse for living in California -- You can move to New Hampshire WITH your job - Lots of trucking escorts needed through Connecticut/Mass/New York/PA/OH/ -- south to all the way to Florida, many going to Washington, Oregon, and yes even Cali.-- No excuses -- Y'all now have a way out. And just think -- on your time off you'll be in liberty central - New Hampshire.

one more thing --- You choose the load that you want, when you want, you are your own boss. Its perfect for the (single) liberty activist male and female alike. Its about a 70/30 male/female driver ratio. So ladies, this is for you to.

TMike:)

Note to liberty activists in New Hampshire: I'm still waiting for you entrepreneurial types to start an escort brokerage to help get folks to New Hampshire -- with a job.

Amazing how CA lawmakers can seek to try to ban some kids' access to pleasing music, but just pased a law stating they can choose to consent to take potentialy dangerous vaccines without their parents' knowledge or consent.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, I hate big government just as much as the next Ron Paul supporter, but California is an amazing place to live. The sun, the beaches, the mountains are all beautiful and while you meet assholes (assholes are everywhere, mind you), there are some genuinely clever, artistic, and kind people there as well. I love the place and I'm proud I call it home.

But that banning music crap is giving the people here a bad name....

The people of California should meet in township halls.... In order to end corruption, you have to start from the bottom. We the People are the government... and it is high time we start acting like it. Township governments consisting of the people in those townships along with a Trustee can start the process. Government must be changed from the bottom-up!

+1. This is why I'm friends with more Bubbas.

I don't care if you aren't smart. Just if you're logical.

I live in Oregon. Moved here from Alaska. I do not understand the mentality of an entire population that thinks it's proper to have a law banning you from pumping your own gas. As far as I can tell, 90% of the people around here are sheep.

At risk of repeating myself, and of making a gross generalization (everyone is an individual!), but this is Chinese culture at work. Even second generation Chinese tend to lean towards totalitarian, Mommy/Daddy style government. It makes perfect sense that she would be surprised that she can't ban whatever she wants to ban.

California ranks #48 on the list of freest states. And there's only 50 states.

Wouldn't that law make wedding receptions with a DJ illegal if they went longer than 3.5 hours?
