Ron Paul, author a bill that would allow students to liquidate their debt and file for bankruptcy in the same manner a business or individual would. This would lead to fewer "easy" loans being passed out like candy, would encourage kids to go to more affordable schools, and would force schools to compete and lower tuition.

From Dan Mitchell below:

What if the NFL Was Run Like the Government School System?

Uh, how would allowing bankruptcy filing on student loans lead to less fraudulent loans? Seem like the opposite would happen. People would not take personal responsibility and it would lead to millions of defaults.

Presumably, they would no longer get handed out like candy.

We already know that isn't so thanks to the housing crisis. Millions of loans were handed out like candy then. The lenders don't care and knew they would never be repaid. They bundle the loans and resell them as "aaa" debt. Then when it all comes crashing down they took government bailouts. How would this be any different?

Approached from a different angle, why are individuals and businesses allowed to file for bankruptcy but not students?

Not students because then the loans wouldn't have been passed out like candy, and the government couldn't have gained such influence over universities. And mortgages have been around a long time, but didn't get handed out like candy until Fannie and Freddie and some new laws came along...

Interesting discussion, that is for sure. My first thoughts (although I haven't put much serious thought into it) are this would have to be accompanied by broader reforms to prevent it from happening again. If it is a one time liquidation of malinvestment I can see multiple areas of benefit. This would be equivalent to a bailout however to which I am generally opposed.

The Fed gave the bankers 20+ trillion dollars in loans and through buying junk assets. We don't owe the national debt and the American people at this point due to the fraud and criminality should be absolved of all debt and let the big corps fail.

If the kids have already defaulted, they owe the money to the Govt, not the lenders so it wouldnt be a bailout.

Yes! This is a great way for the campaign to reach young people!

Particularly since they were sold defective goods.

Would it not be simpler to just get back to giving people their college education in High School like it used to be?

People should not have to waste their money paying for college when what they learn should have been taught to them in highschool.

Some of you may think I am joking. I assure you I am not.

I spent 9 years in private school and spent the last 3 years in a public high school.

High Scool was a joke.

When I was in 8th grade my reading comprehension and vocabulary skills was tested by the State and I was rated
at 4th year college level.

It was well known back in those days that a student in France when graduating from high school had the equivalency of
a US 4 year college degree in terms of education.

In Italy upon graduating highschool you were qualified to teach elementary school without even going to college if you
could pass your exam.

What we have in the United States is the DUMB teaching DUMB.

Public school is a joke and college is an even bigger joke. College is there to continue the brainwashing and to make sure the young people mortgage their lives--perpetual debt. They do not teach self-reliance--they teach dependency! It does exactly what it was designed to do, and one of the reason government has taken control!!

I know more people who have self-educated themselves and they are more free thinkers and more creative than most of the people, who I have met in my travels, that have more degrees than a thermometer!

I posted this before but this information needs to get out there--there is a conspiracy afoot!

I am so with Dr. Paul--get government out of education!! Disband the DOE!!!
