Wasn't banning spray cans and automotive AC systems that actually AC'ed supposed to solve this?

Oh wait, right, a cut in funding was on the table.

Immediately a "crisis" developed.

A massive Arctic ozone hole opened up over the Northern Hemisphere for the first time this year, an international research team reported Sunday.

The hole covered two million square kilometres — about twice the size of Ontario — and allowed high levels of harmful ultraviolet radiation to hit large swaths of northern Canada, Europe and Russia this spring, the 29 scientists say.

The discovery of the “unprecedented” hole comes as the Canadian government is moving to cut its ozone monitoring network.

Yep, damn those scientists trying to protect us from cancer. How dare they. The nerve of some people. Everyone could use a little more radiation.

Damn those forum members trolling others, what would we do without them? Is there any system in place such as rep that would allow us to distinguish bad trolls from other members?

Don't you dare talk bad about Reilly's religion around him. Say something bad about a high priest scientist and he'll Allah Akbar all over your thread.

The hole was reported by the scientific team on 2 Oct. 2011.

The hole opened in the spring of 2011 has since closed.

If they were "trying to protect us" why was this only announced now, within days of the Canadian government announcing cutbacks in the ozone monitoring network?

SPF 100 is retroactive?

If it was a peer reviewed report it can take time. It takes awhile to go from some person noticing something and then having a variety of others confirm. Jumping the gun with a misreported discovery - tabletop cold fusion anyone? - does more harm than good. It wouldn't surprise me if the scientists had to cram to get the peer work finished before cutbacks.

So then there is no question about "protecting us from radiation" now is there?

They couldn't if they wanted to.
