Best video editing software for making promotional videos?

I have some amazing ideas for a video I want to put together but don't exactly have any video editing software. I don't suppose there is any software that somebody would suggest?

if you don't have any editing experience it'd probably be best to just start with movie maker though

what kind of video camera? your video camera might be in a format that is tricky for some programs.

You can get a one month demo of AfterEffects. Best software out there for whizbang compositing and editing.

What OS do you have? If it a Mac id use final cut pro x or 7, depending on your experience level. Most people hate x but I kind of prefer it having not known much about using an NLE.
