What is the point of having primaries and all these debates if at the convention the GOP can still select whoever they want?

The point is to find out who the people want, and to ensure that when the delegates get back home they have to answer to the people for their selection. If we never find out who the people want, then it's hard to argue that the delegates failed to properly represent them in the 'smoke filled room'.

The State GOPs are responsible for selecting the delegates that go to the National Convention. Different States do it different ways, but ultimately: The primaries determine which people get sent as delegates to the national convention. The best thing you can do for Ron Paul is to become a delegate to the national convention, and the best way to do that is to become a delegate to your State convention.

In Nevada we took over the convention but they just shut it down. I don't really like the idea of bargaining with these people for some proportionate amount of delegates though.

If we ever win a convention, I think we should just take all the delegates personally.

the problem would be is if there is a brokered convention; Ron goes there with 30-40% of the delegates and the others block him.

or the convention selects a VP nominee not to Ron's liking (Rubio?)

The guy running doesn't choose his own VP?

no, both nominees are selected by the delegates. by tradition the nominee's choice is selected but in 2008 McCain wanted Lieberman, but realized he could not get him nominated. that was why Palin was selected so fast.

could happen like this
Ron gets narrowly nominated (much like 1976 Ford Reagan), and Florida Paul delegates vote Rubio instead of who ever Ron wants.
Ford had to dump VP Rockefeller and select Dole because convention would not nominate him.

If Ron wins and they nominate a neocon like Rubio, we can be assured Ron won't live to see the end of his 1st term.
