I searched reasons why this might happen:

http://www.noob2geek.com/web-hosting/6-reasons-hosting-account-suspended/

Number 5 could be possible, we've been promotig (spamming some might say) the website on A LOT of sites.

Who knows, I just hope it's back up SOON. :(

That, bill payment, or server issues are the most likely. I'm a worst case scenario kind of guy. :)

If multiple complaints are filed with the hosting company then they could suspend the account. The requests could be robo-generated or real. Not sure what the issue is, but good luck getting it restored.

Yikes. Not sure exactly what happened. Here is the e-mail I got:

During this routine monitoring we have found that your account is utilizing an excessive amount of system resources, and we have been forced to suspend your site as per our terms and conditions '10% CPU/MEM/MySQL Policy'

no, hosting company wouldn't take action like that for something like this. If that were so, all i'd have to do is spam the hell out of my competitors websites and get their hosting companies to shut them down. Just not going to happen.

This is what I'm looking into. There was an odd file at the root I've never seen before also. I can't tell if this is generated by the server or not.

The host said that blackthisout.com was taking up 40% of their server resources when they shut it down!

I'm going through step-by-step for each potential thing here. It very well could be that the widgets are overloading the server too, since they are querying the db to get the number of pledges and getting hundreds of thousands of page views.

Will hopefully have it back up within the hour.

It is likely not the host, but a problem with the MySQL scripting. Google MySQL high cpu and you see many similar problems and some good ideas to resolve them.

Good luck getting it fixed.

More likely that there are too many processes running at once. We have widgets out there that are pulling 250k pageviews and interacting with the server at the same time.

They have "unlimited" bandwidth.

Trust me, HostGator does not have unlimited bandwidth no matter what their claims. 6 years ago they shut me down for using to much bandwidth. I now host with SoftLayer, formerly The Planet. Best host in the world, but you can't get a hosting package, you have to lease an entire dedicated server which is what I run Flix on.

squarepusher
09-30-2011, 12:43 AM
its a server overload, the 'unlimted' packages are mostly just shared virtual boxes, you aren't allowed to use a significant amount of CPU or anything that makes the CPU do work, other than simploy display web pages. You might have to temporarly upgrade your acct if it allows for more CPU use, or remove things that cause excessive SQL queries

edit: softlayer has cloud servers.

Maybe we do a Chip-In to raise a couple hundred for a dedicated server or something. I'm sure it'll be pretty easy to raise that kind of money for this project. It's going to be huge!

I was just talking to someone else about doing this as well. If we are having this problem now.. then it's going to be even worse moving forward.

Here is the most recent update from the host:

"I am sorry, but your site is very popular. There were more than 1,2 million connections to your site. According to my investigation about 40% visitors came from http://www.ronpaulforums.com/ and http://www.ronpaul.com/ . Your domain name is posted on the home page of this site."

This is the widgets, I'm 80% sure.

On a lighter note... I don't think ANY of our other moneybombs have had this kind of issue. That's a good thing, depending on how you look at it. :)

So it just got shut down for too much bandwidth? That's a good thing, unless its related to the issues over on the campaign website. You're not connected to that site in any way are you? Minimal banners, no direct data pulls, etc, right?

thread title made me LOL btw

Not bandwidth issue, but rather too many processes going at once. Currently doing data queries.. but need to cache these moving forward.

Definitely a great issue to have. And all the more reason to promote minimalism! (Saves on bandwidth).

Do you have a 2nd website you can post a chip-in box at? I'm sure we can raise $200 or so within 24 hours to pay for 1 month of hosting service. You should get a dedicated server rather than a shared server. I can't imagine JustHost having a dedicated server option.

sometimes, you can 'up' your CPU allowance for more money from the hosting companies. I'm not sure if this host offers that service though. You will only need the website for a few more weeks, right?

Well, the problem is is that we were consuming something like 40% of their entire server..

The web site, if it's going to serve widgets to other web sites.. is going to be pushing into the realm of necessity for a dedicated solution.

Yeah... Most hosts less honest than SoftLayer have "normal use" clauses. You have "unlimited bandwidth" until your use of their resources is so high as to be "abnormal."

Similar to "unlimited bandwidth" cell-phone plans where they dramatically throttle your speeds after you've passed a certain mark. Widespread bullshit marketing.
