A new poll puts Mitt Romney and Ron Paul at the head of the Republican pack, suggesting that they are the two best equipped to take on and defeat Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election.

It has long been established that Mitt Romney is one of the leading contenders for the Republican nomination. Many within the GOP felt that Rick Perry would be Romney’s main rival, but while that narrative has been pushed by the media, Perry has struggled somewhat and it seems to be Ron Paul who is surging. Apart from Romney, Perry and Paul, the other candidates look to be out of the race.

Interestingly, the trio are also the figures who have the greatest level of support from the tea party. Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum, meanwhile, have very low levels of support within this key segment of the GOP electorate. And Sarah Palin is still polling fairly well, despite being almost certainly not in the race.

The poll supports that suggestion that the Republican presidential campaign is solidifying around Romney up front and either Paul or Perry as the main challenger. Perry’s momentum seems to be fading while Paul’s is growing. Romney looks set to be one of the frontmen when the final decision is made. Looking at the various polls this week, it looks like Ron Paul could be his main rival.
