I was listening to some older records in my collection and something happened that took me completely by surprise. Just sitting there listening I found out one of those songs has become surprisingly relevant. The Moody Blues "Minstrel's Song" couldn't fit Ron Paul any better if they had written it directly for him. See for yourself, here are the lyrics.
Words - a simple song
A minstrel sings
A way of life - in his eyes
Hear - the morning call
of waking birds
When they are singing, bringing
Love - love.
Everywhere, love is all around,
Everywhere, love is all around.
Now - the winter's gone
Cold wind has blown
The endless stream, in our lives
Where the minstrel sings
This simple song
He's always bringing, singing,
Love - love.
Everywhere, love is all around,
Everywhere, love is all around.
Listen to the one
Who sings of love.
Follow our friend,
Our wandering friend,
Listen to the one,
Who sings of love.
Everywhere love is around,
Around, around.
Hear - the nation sing
Our minstrel's song
As he walks by, in their lives
Soon - the spring will come,
And everyone - will all be
singing, bringing
Love - love.
Everywhere, love is all around,
Everywhere, love is all around.
Listen to the one
Who sings of love.
Follow our friend,
Our wandering friend,
Listen to the one,
Who sings of love.
Everywhere love is around,
Around, around.
I know it sounds a bit cheesy - don't knock it until you've heard it, this is the Moody Blues and they know what they are doing. There are clips on Amazon for the "Question of Balance" album. Just click this link for samples in WMV or Real.

It seems to me if we could get this song attached to Ron in the public consciousness it might do him some good, get him a bit more noticed. The song is damn near as polite and subtle a revolution song as it is possible to write, and it just happens to sum things up well and match the campaign slogan perfectly. It is also from an era of music that will appeal greatly to folks in between 30-50, many of them will remember it. It also very, very seldom played on the radio any longer even on classic rock stations, so it would stand out. Most stations should have it.
Is there any reason we can't start calling up local radio stations (respectfully, not like a flash mob with 100 requests a day), and asking them to play this song, and dedicating it to Ron Paul? It's not like we're part of his campaign under any laws - any of us can call and request a song for any reason we want, so maybe a better set of questions are, 1) are radio stations allowed to do that, 2) how can they tell anyway, and 3) how long can we get away with it before they notice if it is actually a problem?
If we do call them we should almost certainly avoid mentioning anything about Ron other than his name, just a simple request/dedication from one person to another. Ron can promote himself, we just need to get his name out there. No point in taking up drive-time radio with politics, that's what radio talk shows are for anyway.
There are probably a lot of other songs we could use to get on hip-hop, alternative, etc stations, so if anyone has suggestions for similarly-themed songs that would be helpful. I don't know if one pervasive song is more useful than a variety of them, though. I would think a single song would be easier for people to notice if they kept hearing it now and then. On the other hand, multiple songs will probably be easier to slip through whatever filters there may be, and could reach more diverse stations. If we could keep this sort of thing running quietly, smoothly, and steadily for some time it should help to get some people to type his name into Google, and that's how we all got here so that's all we need to do.
Thoughts? Think we can start calling him "The Minstrel" soon? :)
