While it is true that Rush had said a similar joke earlier in the day, Gary Johnson did not know that Rush used the dog joke first.

In an interview post-debate with Fox News, Johnson said he borrowed the line from a contest held by a New Mexico radio station that asked listeners to deliver the top 14 best lines for use in the debate.

The line was “among a list of 14 zingers sent to me,” Johnson said, referring to the radio station. It was a “very collective New Mexico effort that gave me that line.”

Johnson said he didn't know Limbaugh had used the dog joke.

But ultimately he did give Rush credit for coming up with it as the supporter who sent it in likely got it from Rush:

Johnson tweeted:

Re: the dogs, I understand Rush Limbaugh made the same point. Credit to Rush for a great and very true line.

I mean.. as if Gary Johnson would be listening to Rush Limbaugh
