They have created a different set of standards to hold themselves to. What the statistics are really saying should be blaitantly obvious. They can get away with committing acts that by any other standard would be considered a Crime, while we, the Mundanes, are convicted of offenses that are not even Crimes, like operating Lemonade Stands or not wearing seat belts. Seriously, when was the last time a Cop got a ticket for driving around in their Patrol Car without a Seat Belt? Oh, wait, Never? And they are held to the same standards as we are? They dont operate following the rules of a Second Set of Books? My left nut they dont!

Shocked? I'm shocked that the conviction/incarceration rate is so high actually. I recently read an local article in which the defender argued that his clients police service should be taken into account during the sentencing phase. I really did not understand this. Seems to me that this should be used against him. He was an officer and therefore knew that his actions were illegal and used his position as an officer to try and evade prosecution and should, at least to me, be held more culpable in such an instance.

Same here... initial reaction: "Holy shit, it's not zero!"

And isn't that only crimes for which they are tried? Many cops' actions don't even get to go on trial. They just shred the evidence or nothing gets said because they're officers.

I once had an argument with a professor who repeated the old lie that cops are held to a "higher standard". I challenged her to name a specific incidence where a police officer was even convicted with a crime. She could not.

This should be opposite. Having a shield shouldn't make you any better than everyone else. The Constitution doesn't recognize any one group of people—based on race, gender, creed, origin, or employment—as being superior. Conversely, it should be how they taught us when I was in training... cops should be held responsible and given longer sentences for crimes.
