"We should never be comfortable with the Pay-to-Play crisis that has turned Texas government into a game for rich influence peddlers and lobbyists,” said Debra Medina, the director of We Texans and a former candidate for the governor’s office. “Under Texas’s current administration, laws are routinely written with favored political donors in mind. During the most recent legislative session, for example, the Legislature passed a bill that granted a nuclear-waste monopoly to Waste Control Specialists, owned by Harold Simmons. Simmons is Governor Rick Perry’s number-two donor. Days after that bill was signed into law, Simmons wrote a $100,000 check to Americans for Rick Perry, the Super PAC supporting the governor’s presidential campaign.”

Janet Ahmad, President of Homeowners for Better Building, pointed to similar problems in the politically powerful home building industry. “Top Rick Perry donor Bob Perry paid nearly $8 million in campaign contributions and sought and received his own regulatory agency called the Texas Residential Construction Commission in 2003. Gov. Perry then appointed industry-connected people to the nine member commission that oversaw the agency, including Perry Homes VP, corporate counsel John Krugh. The resulting agency was so anti-consumer and industry protective that the Texas Legislature recently abolished it. Meanwhile Bob Perry’s political contributions have become the hallmark of influence for Texas public policy.”
