What the hell happens to these people? They get it once, and then it seems to zoom out of their heads... It is too bad he didn't have the balls to change it.

Can't argue with that, at least he was honest enough to say it aloud.

He understands what it is, he more than likely doesn't understand the economic issues aggression causes. I'm sure he views the state monopoly on violence as a tool to mold society. You'll notice here how he defends the monopoly (because if we had a competitive markets in defense and justice, we'd necessarily have chaos, of course :p)

It seemed to me that he was arguing for the state to be the monopoly (aka the state is the only entity that is "benevolent" to dispense of violence fairly). It sounded like he was arguing against their being competition with this issue. Did anybody take it that way?

Yeah, that's exactly what he's doing...

Did you really think he ever planned on changing it?

I wasn't quite that jaded... but now I know the error of my ways after thinking about it. It's still a shame though. I didn't really do a whole lot of research on Obama... just kind of hated him because I was a generic Republican supporter way back in '07.

Sold out? He's been groomed since his stint at Columbia.

"Monopoly on the legitimate use of force" is a commonly used definition for what makes a state.

The monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force is a political concept formalized by the sociologist Max Weber, in his 1918 speech Politik als Beruf (Politics as a Vocation).

Weber argued that the state cannot be characterized by its ends, since there are very few goals which no state would ever seek to achieve, and no particular task which is both exclusive to the state, and also unique to the state.

He concluded therefore that the state must be characterized by the means which it, and only it, has at its disposal: "a state is a human community that (successfully) claims the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory".

And that definition is a fallacy because it begs the question.

The guy standing BEHIND the gun often feels that there's no more need to be subtle. Our job is to show the bastard how wrong he is! ;)

I never thought anarcho-capitalists/voluntarists would be advocates of gun control. ;)
