Gov. Rick Snyder plans to direct doctors in Michigan to begin monitoring the body weight of their young patients and provide the data to a state registry in one of the most extensive government efforts to address the growing problem of pediatric obesity, the Associated Press has learned.

(How is this just done "by decree"? When did the governor of Michigan become a king? - AF)

The move would help track the state's growing obesity problem while opening the way for doctors to be more proactive in offering advice, Snyder spokeswoman Sara Wurfel told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The Republican governor will announce the initiative Wednesday as part of his proposal for improving Michigan residents' health.

The body mass index statistics for patients under 18 would be reported to the Michigan Care Improvement Registry but the children's identity would remain anonymous. (Wanna fucking bet? - AF) The state already requires doctors to report how many children are immunized.

It sounds like the Michigan CPS will be busy at work soon taking away kids whose parents let them have too many twinkies, eh?

After all, the State knows better than you, since your kiddo is a fatass and needs to be taken in order to facilitate a proper taxpayer.

BMI is such a worthless number. It is an oversimplified ratio of height vs weight designed for people of tiny frames and a sedentary lifestyle and doesn't take in to account the differences between men and women (yes they use the same scale). If you actually work out and have muscle mass, you can easily be classified as "obese" by the BMI scale.

You can literally have a six pack and be obese according to BMI.

If you want to run the numbers on your self:

BMI = ( w / h^2) * 703

Where:
w = weight in pounds
h = height in Inches

The ratios are -
Underweight, below 18.5
Normal, 18.5 - 24.9
Overweight, 25-29.9
Obese, 30 and above

Another small government republican at work again, what's next, the vaccination program for young girls like Governor Perry mandated in Texas?

Mr. Snyder you were elected for less government involvement not more. It's time to stop all this nonsense. We already know being overweight is bad.

Exactly! BMI is about as outdated at phrenology. It means nothing! First, it will make the obesity problem look way worse than it is. Second, being overweight doesn't necessarily mean you're unhealthy. An overweight person who exercises is healthier than a skinny person who never exercises. These bureaucrats don't know a damn thing about health. All they're going to do is make things worse.
