Shoshana Hebshi will never forget where she was on the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11.

She and two other airline passengers were handcuffed and strip-searched after flying into Detroit on Sunday.

No charges were filed against Hebshi, a self-described "half-Arab, half-Jewish housewife living in suburban Ohio," or the two men sitting next to her, who were flying in from Denver when the crew of Frontier Airlines Flight 623 alerted authorities that they were reportedly behaving suspiciously.

In a blog post titled "Some real Shock and Awe: Racially profiled and cuffed in Detroit," Hebshi, an American citizen, told her tale of temporary detainment, which she had begun to share with Twitter followers in real-time — until handcuffs were placed on her wrists.

Hebshi, a writer and editor and mother of twin sons, didn't know the other two passengers in Row 12. They were Indian men, she wrote. And they didn't know each other. But they got a lot closer when they were all crammed into the back of a squad car.

What happened, according to Frontier spokesman Peter Kowalchuk, begins with a bathroom.

"One of the males, who was not feeling well, got up to use the restroom during the flight. The other male got up at approximately the same time to use the restroom. The female remained seated in her row," the FBI said in a statement.

An agent thanked her for being cooperative, she wrote. "'It's 9/11 and people are seeing ghosts. They are seeing things that aren't there.' He said they had to act on a report of suspicious behavior, and this is what the reaction looks like. He said there had been 50 other similar incidents across the country that day."


Among the other incidents: An American Airlines flight from Los Angeles also reported a security threat Sunday, and was shadowed by F-16s "out of an abundance of caution," the FBI said in a statement; and in Dallas, a rented moving truck parked at a curb at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport driven by a crew member of the Discovery Channel show "Sons of Guns" also caused a scare. Investigators were suspicious because the driver said, "I got a couple of guns," but FBI said he was just waiting for a co-worker. <<<WTF!!!!!!? F-16's shadowing an airline?

Anyway I dunno how she managed to cooperate with them, probably out of fear. But as I read her story I was wondering what I would do in the same spot. It could very well happen that I would never see the light of day again if I, like I right now like to think I would, refused to cooperate and just remained silent without a lawyer present. Can you imagine having done nothing wrong and being treated like an animal? I think it would piss me off so much I'd be willing to endure a lot of discomfort when I wouldn't cooperate just so that I could stick it back to them later with a lawsuit if they'd ever release me again.

But w/e. Luckily I am from Europe and fortunately my country all though a still pretty socialists one doesn't have such an oppressive gestapo policies just yet and even if I did ever have some wishes to visit the States I am now more and more inclined to never travel to your country.

I challenge anyone to read it and not have a blood pressure spike. What are we coming to as a country? This woman, along with two other completely innocent passengers, were handcuffed, locked up like the worst sort of criminal, strip searched, and denied access to phone calls and any sort of information about why they were being detained. I have no idea how this woman managed to maintain her composure during this ordeal. In her place, I don't think I could have been as calm. Hell, I KNOW I couldn't have been as calm.

And the reason for this atrocity?

I'm in awe of the woman for not completely losing it. If it had been me, I would probably have gone ape**** on the TSA goons and would probably still be locked up.

For anyone reading this who hasn't read Ms. Hebshi's account, here is just a small snippet to give the flavor of what she endured:


We arrived at an offsite building and remained in the squad car for a few minutes. The Indian man was taken out of the car first, and an officer stood at the door to make sure I didn’t go anywhere. I asked him several times what was going on and he wouldn’t answer me. It was like I was invisible. I felt so helpless and shocked. I was being treated like a criminal.

Then it was my turn. I got out of the car and was led, still cuffed, to a cell. “Are you serious?” I asked the officer, and he said yes. The heavy metal door was shut and locked behind me. Again, I asked what was going on and why was I here. Finally he said, they will let you know later. They are going to ask you some questions.

I sat down on the metal cot that hung off the wall. It had a thin, green vinyl mattress–mattress is a generous term–that offered no comfort. It was about a 6-by-10 cell, the concrete walls were painted a light yellow but were streaked with black dirt. The floor was some sort of stainless steel, and a stainless steel toilet that has probably never seen the good side of a scrubbing brush, instructed me to keep holding my stretched bladder as long as I could. Near the ceiling above the toilet there was a video camera.

A plainclothes officer stood came to my door and asked me if I spoke English. Something in me snapped at that question. Of course I spoke English I’m an American citizen, you asshole! Well, I left the expletive out. “Ok,” he said and stood watch outside my door saying he wanted to make sure I didn’t “flush anything.” He also wouldn’t tell me what was going on.

Poor woman, taken away by the thought police. What is this country coming to? If you're the wrong race and you get up to use the toilet, or the people who are also the wrong race sitting next to you get up to use the toilet, you're basically a terrorist? For some reason, I'm not surprised. Really, this sort of thing has been begging to happen with all of these new laws, and similar things happened before in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, but it's never right. The sick thing is, I bet there are scores of people out there defending this kind of thuggish behavior.
