Yep, there is a terror threat. We need troops everywhere with M16s next to children.

I wonder what else he will use this "threat" for.

now, if that was a pic of me holding my assault rifle standing next to my kids, totally different story.

NYC has been like this since 9/11. I remember National Guard troops in Grand Central station with m-16's within a week after 9/11. I was not impressed by the uniforms, (sloppy stance, unkept BDU's) but others basically worshiped these guys as heros. :(
edit: 3 years before 9/11 I was in Europe and saw soilders at train stations etc.... and thought "This will never happen in the USA" :(

That would make me feel safer. I don't think the NG guy has the SAPI plates in that vest ....

They're waiting for a Mumbai hotel scene to happen.

This is the "normalization of tyranny/police statism" that's been worrying me a very long time. :(

IMO, it's more like the end of the 3rd republic. Historically, the American republic has grown beyond the scope of a republic and then collapsed back 3 times, sort of like how Rome began as a republic, grew to an empire, then collapsed back into a republic. (some historians reckon it differently, though)

Can someone explain to me how an M-16 or even a squad of them is going to stop a Highjacked airplane.
Or an 18 wheeler full of explosives. or even one guy with a suicide vest?
What a pointless show.

Yep. Historically, this has been an intimidation tactic to make the people docile and very aware of the consequences of questioning authority.

Good point.
The "show" is to show us that they control us, not that they can repel hijacked airplanes.
