Bachmann the democrat?

I just read an article that defended Rick Perry's ex-democrat-ness by claiming Bachmann was also once a democrat. Is this true? How recently?

Bachmann grew up in a Democratic family, but she says she became a Republican during her senior year at Winona State. She told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that she was reading Gore Vidal's 1973 novel, Burr: "He was kind of mocking the Founding Fathers and I just thought, I just remember reading the book, putting it in my lap, looking out the window and thinking, 'You know what? I don't think I am a Democrat. I must be a Republican.'"[9][49]

During the debate when each candidate was talking (esp the first time around), MSNBC made some bullet points on the screen in regards to certain key tidbits regarding the specific person talking. While it mentioned that Bachmann was the House's Tea Party founder it also mentioned that she supported Carter in '76 (while the real McCoy was supporting Reagan).

She worked on Jimmy Carter's campaign when she was in college I believe. While not exactly attractive, it doesn't hold a candle to the fact that Perry held elected office as a Democrat.
