Ronald Reagan.

If we just want to list "winners" - Henry Clay and Williams Jennings Bryan were never President.

Don't forget about the guy who ran in 1976, 1980, and 1984. ;)

None of them are quixotic fringe quirky kooks.

You can't really count running for a second term. How many ran three times before winning their first term?

you can, if the media accusation is that Ron Paul has run three times.

FDR ran four times and served only slightly more than 12 years.
has anyone else ran four times with greater than 1 in 10 odds
of winning each time? is FDR unique in american history? if one
looks at 1968, LBJ may be a near three timer in that he ran in
1960 and 1964 before deciding to not go the distance in 1968.
