Ind. State Police Nab I-65 ‘Samurai’

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (CBS) – Call it the showdown with the samurai.

Indiana State Police say they encountered a shirtless man wielding a 35-inch-long samurai sword on the inner shoulder of Interstate 65 on Sunday afternoon near U.S. Highway 30. Police say farther north, a Toyota had been abandoned in the middle lane of southbound I-65 at 61st Avenue.

The swordsman, who wore plaid knee-length shorts, was marching “like a drum major, holding the sword, moving it up and down in rhythm with his marching cadence,” the state police said in a news release.

When a state trooper approached him, the man swung the sword “in a defensive manner,” police said.

The swordsman, dressed only in plaid shorts and slip-on shoes, then tried to gain entrance to a 2010 Chevrolet sport-utility vehicle that was pulled over on the expressway to avoid a responding Merrillville police car, state police told the Sun-Times Media wire.

Finally, the suspect was handcuffed by Merrillville police, who ordered him to the ground at gunpoint.

At the Lake County, Ind. jail, the offender, Byron Andre Womack, 43, of Cicero, announced that he was “Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs,” state police said.

He was charged with attempted carjacking, resisting law enforcement and possession of marijuana.

Authorities say Womack gave several different names before his identity was verified.

What law did he violate for law enforcement to harass him in the first place?
Sounds like nothing would have happened if the cops left him alone

Leaving a car in the middle lane of an Interstate is asking for an accident to happen.

Of course this was in Indiana one of the most boring states to drive through so maybe all that corn finally got to him?

61st Avenue is about 2.5 miles farther north of 30.

Realistically, I'm glad they didn't just drill him. Of course, if they had just shot him down, would we be reading about it, or would it be a non-story?

So are the cops saying it is legal to use a sword in a defensive manner when approached by police officers? Something's not adding up with that part of the story.

I better rush home this afternoon and have some cocoa puffs, it's been quite awhile. I don't own a sword of any sort, but I'm pretty vicious in my purple geo tracker!

A half-naked Cicero, Indiana male was imprisoned Sunday after state troopers noticed him walking down a busy Highway holding a 35-inch samurai blade. The male surrendered after a brief altercation with officers. Later, he told law enforcement that he was "cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs".

As we all know, Cocoa Puffs is a brand of chocolate-flavored puffed grain breakfast cereal, manufactured by General Mills. Can you imagine a Man brandishing samurai sword tells police he is cuckoo for cocoa puffs (http://www.newsytype.com/10960-cuckoo-for-cocoa-puffs/)? He was insane to do that. The man was marching like a drum major, holding the sword, moving it up and down in rhythm with his marching cadence. Ricky Rayner, an Indiana State Trooper, reported seeing an abandoned white Toyota in the center lane of busy Interstate Highway 65 at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. It was only moments later that the officer saw a man, who was later identified as 43-year-old Bryon Womack, marching down the highway wearing nothing but plaid shorts and slip-on type shoes, wielding the 3-foot Japanese-style sword. Womack at first refused to give his identity when he was questioned at the jail. He told officers simply that he was “cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.” He was charged with resisting arrest, attempted car jacking and possession of marijuana.
