INTRO

Rick Perry

Mitt Romney

Michele Bachmann

Ron Paul

Ron Paul can command the support of about 8 percent of the Republican electorate indefinitely. That’s not enough to be the nominee, but it is enough to change the trajectory of the Republican Party for the next generation.

Unlike Michele Bachmann or any of the other candidates who have seen bursts of sudden support, Paul is not in the race because of his personality, biography or stump speech. His backers support the 76-year-old Texas congressman because he offers the purest articulation of libertarian principles and doesn’t change his tune is pursuit of broader support.

A lot of politicians like to say that they are leading a movement, not running a campaign. In Paul’s case, that is actually true. And while Bachmann has seen her support diminish amid questions of her viability, Paul has no such concern because his backers don’t care if he’s not the frontrunner.

The question that haunts Republican strategists is whether Paul will take that support into a Libertarian general election candidacy. Paul and his backers have a prickly past with frontrunner Perry down in Texas and surely have no love for corporate captain Romney, he of the mandatory health insurance. If he and his backers balk at backing the eventual GOP nominee, it could be serious trouble for the party in the 2012 election.

While Paul wouldn’t take all of his Republican supporters in the general election, he would pick up many independents and Libertarians to replace them. In an election that could come down to a few precincts in Ohio or Florida, that’s a serious threat.

Paul’s 8 percent is his ticket to stay in the race, remain on the debate stage and its also the reason that Perry and Romney can’t do what Rudy Giuliani tried in 2008 and attempt to demonize Paul or his principles.

The Rest

It's not enough. They are still downplaying him. But I guess you take what you can get from Fox...

I'm sorry, but 4th place is far from good enough. And really? The last Fox poll had Ron Paul AHEAD OF MICHELE BACHMANN, yet they still rank her ahead of him? They're still spinning this race hard.

Today and Wednesday could change that order a lot.

Yeah, it seems like the MSM outlets are all convinced they needed to push harder against Ron Paul. He's actually polling well enough to win come 2012, and they are campaigning hard against him these days. They are trying to make September 2011 a weak month for Paul, one that pushes his campaign out of double digit polling; however September could be one of his 'finest hours'. Three debates, Perry begins to fall, two moneybombs (rp2012 & RevPAC), more ads and more exposure. Its possible that by the end of the month Paul could be running second to Perry and ahead of the rest.

They are still ignoring him whenever discussions on the GOP race comes up. It's Perry, Romney, Bachmann, Perry, Romney, Bachmann, Perry, Romney, Bachmann. Come on sheeple, hear it enough times and then vote for either of the 3! Critical thinkers need not apply.

He was in third place in their own most recent poll. How is putting him in FOURTH being nice to us?

And they keep saying '8%' as if it weren't 14% and 12% etc in polls far more reputable than theirs.

they say:

1. will never be nominee'
2. is a niche candidate with a perpetual 8% (ignoring it has grown steadily while others fall)
3. hammer at him being 'libertarian' which they know has bad connotations to many of their readers, for a libertine gloss Ron Paul absolutely has no part of.

This is not being nice.

Ok, today is 9/5. This is the day for the campaign bombshell. I wonder what it will be. :)

My bet is on a campaign office or endorsement.

The mere fact that they can't ignore him is a phase shift in the political spectrum in and of itself.

His popularity in the polls will only increase from here, slowly perhaps but increase they will.

No one will believe a Perry/Romney dichotomy which ignores Paul, and Bachmann has already peaked and is fading.

The unknown now is whether Palin is in or out.

Should be above Bachmann.

Even though they rank him as fourth, look at the bright side. Its one of the few rare moments where they do not IGNORE us.

This.

People need to quit expecting unicorns and rainbows. Ron Paul is NEVER going to be admired or praised by the ESTABLISHMENT. Be happy that they mentioned him at all, and as someone else said be thankful he wasn't included in "the rest".

Frankly, the more momentum he gains - the more we all need to be praying that they don't Kennedy him!

Bachmann is still ahead of Ron in both the national RCP average and the Iowa RCP average. If Ron's average poll numbers leap ahead of Bachmann's, they'll place Ron ahead of Bachmann.

Ron Paul is, realistically, in third place right now. He polls ahead of Bachmann, raises more money than Bachmann, and has more supporters than Bachmann. He has more experience, more authenticity, and a much more extensive and more credible record in Congress.

Rick Perry is the candidate of the week, and will see his support slip away over time. Still, he is the governor of a large state, and acceptable to the establishment, while issuing empty platitudes to the grassroots.

Mitt Romney is made of money, and has some base level of support, but is probably less appealing to conservatives than Ron Paul is. If conservatives want a conservative who can win, they will choose Ron Paul over Romney.
