Amid cuts, U.S. military withdraws from Europe

Pullouts from Iraq and Afghanistan mask a larger drawdown

Sep 4, 2011

With little fanfare outside a muted flag folding ceremony in Wiesbaden, Germany, the final American division in Europe — the U.S. 1st Armored Division, which fought its way from North Africa to the Italian Alps during the war — packed up and left for its base at Fort Bliss, Texas, in May.

What cuts are they talking about? The DoD budget increased this year. I am flabbergasted. (It is good at least to see ~6% of American forces stationed in Europe withdraw)

PS: Their numbers for Americans stationed in Europe is wrong. It is much more than 42,000.

According to last years numbers there were nearly 80,000!
