Is there any way to know how many people wrote in Ron Paul instead of voting for McCain or Obama or the other candidates?

No, there isn't. Most write-in votes don't get counted at all.

I think just shy of 200,000 if I remember correctly. I don't remember if it was the primary or the general though. Scott Davis would know for sure.

Add in Chuck Baldwins votes as well, and many of Bob Barr's. They would have been votes for Ron had he remained in.
Chuck was a vocal supporter and only entered the race after Ron dropped out.
Some even voted for McCain after Ron dropped out.

There is no way of telling how many protest votes would have gone to Ron either.

Well that sucks. Luckily this time we won't need to write in Ron's name :)

Your right there isn't much mention of Ron Paul write-ins, or even Ron Paul in 2008 document PDF's.

Ron Paul received 41,905 votes; listed in Louisiana (Louisiana Taxpayers) and in Montana (Constitution), with write-in status in California. Wiki 2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_2008)

Wiki 2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_2008)
Obama / Biden Democratic (50+DC) 69,456,897
McCain / Palin Republican (50+DC) 59,934,814
Nader / Gonzalez Independent (45+DC) 736,804
Barr / Root Libertarian (45) 524,524
Baldwin / Castle Constitution (37) 199,314
McKinney / Clemente Green (32) 161,195
Others — total 226,908

Ya, of those 226,908 .. just shy of 200,000 were Ron Paul write-ins I'm almost positive. Where are RP Revolution write-ups about this from 2008, I can't even find them online.

Remember that Ron was still on the ballot in a few states, due to some technicalities. He got almost 42,000 ballot votes and probably around 118k write-ins:

What I do know is in the 5th ward of my local city I canvassed, we got 42 Ron Paul write-in in the general. (lol) Out of about 1700 houses I went too in 6 weeks. I think it was a few past 600 for our whole State. Where is Scott Davis, I'm sure he knows all the figures.

Actually this would be a good project to work on to bring about awareness, I think.

I voted Baldwin because people said if you write in Ron it won't be counted. Next day in the local paper, they print the number of RP write ins.
