Is it legal for a church to have people sign petitions in the lobby of the church? I think it is probably fine since it is a private property but is it a private property if it gets tax breaks?

Off the top of my head, if it is a 501-(3)-c church, I would say no.

It probably is illegal, but it shouldn't be.

Please explain? Because churches don't pay taxes, my money, in effect, subsidizes their propaganda. I refuse to let them use my money to meddle in politics. Insane, absolutely insane.

I believe the reason for government is to protect liberty. They shouldn't be in the business of shutting down anyone's free speech regardless of the location.

Wait a minute - here, on Ron Paul Forums, you are seriously saying that the church's money partially belongs to you, because the government isn't taking it when it should?

They have less of their money taken from them than other organizations. Instead of getting pissed about that fact, how about we work to get more people into that same happy situation?

Lower/no taxation is NOT a subsidy. A subsidy is giving money to someone, a tax break is taking less money than otherwise would have been taken.

This is Ron Paul 101.

I guess it is the same as public school teachers spreading their opinion. Liberty of speech.

Nope.

If you do not wish to claim tax exempt status, you do not have to take the 501(3)c non profit corporation label.

Hell, you don't even have to incorporate at all, many "house" churches are doing just that.

Avoids messy Imperial entanglements.

That seems the way to go. On the other hand I wonder if some corporations could slip under the 501c guidelines and get out of paying taxes.
