because the country that had 30,000 nuclear missiles on a hair trigger pointed at us just shot down a commercial jet with americans on board.

Yeaw it was also the day that showed how dangerous a direct democracy would be. The polls showed the american people were ready to go to war even nuclear over this.

Jesse Helms and Steve Syms were also scheduled to be on that flight but were delayed and took another flight instead.......Helms was very influential among conservatives and demonized by the media.

Do you think that Helms got the message and toned down his rhetoric after this, just as Reagan did after the assassination attempt? I know he changed his tune on 'certain issues' (Israel).
