What is your take on this speech, how close is it to the virtues we hold dear?

This is a good movie and Charlie Chaplin is a far better actor than most people give him credit for (if they've heard of him, that is).

The speech is powerful and true and very in line with what we all believe. Every body should watch this, if you haven't seen it.

Movie = ' The Great Dictator ' (1940)
Chaplin portrays a Hitler character in this movie. The character in that clip is not the Hitler one, but an imposter that is put in his place because he looks like the Hitler one. You're going to have to watch the movie. I do remember laughing a few times. It's worth a watch, check it out.

When this film was released, Adolf Hitler banned it in Germany and in all countries occupied by the Nazis. Curiosity eventually got the best of him and he had a print brought in through Portugal. He screened it not once but twice. Unfortunately, history did not record his reaction to the film. When told of this, Charles Chaplin said, "I'd give anything to know what he thought of it."

Here's another version of that clip.

This one would be cooler if it had clips in it like the OP's vid.

Please please please please do not fall for every single speech that criticizes the current situation but then offers no solution or even a false solution because that's exactly what this speech does, offers a FALSE solution.

I don't want democracy, I don't hate progress, I don't want the people to have the power, I want the individual to be FREE and SOVEREIGN(do you even understand these words?), I don't hate machines, I don't hate greed, I don't want us to unite!

It's a powerful speech but full of propaganda bullshit that just confuses people about what they really need to have a long free and prosperous life.

Yep… that's the gist of his speech, which makes sense because he was a communist.

When he was talking about machines I was thinking about govt as the machine that has separated us and made us cold towards each other by being dependent on it and not each other. I just posted about this last night....jacked my post.

Sounds like touchy-feely socialist claptrap to me. The reason part is ok. The only 'united' part should be united by tolerance of the others' individuality. By cutting the militarism to tide the seniors over,bringing in competing currencies and pardoning the Federal,non hard crime drug users is to stop the fighting between groups. 'They' keep us fighting eachother for scraps so their grand theft goes unchallenged.Once people can see that the real enemy shares the same body,they will scream for their congressional representatives to give Ron the rest.

One of the greatest of all time. I don't think he's under-credited, though. Maybe by people in our generation, because the silent film is basically a distant memory. He was lauded as one of the greatest actors throughout his career, and long after it. I believe Laurence Olivier called him THE best. People in the industry to this day gush over him. The Tramp is still, 100 years later, one of the most recognizable characters ever created. The man was a genius. Watching his acceptance of the honorary oscar is incredible. I've never see such an applause in my life.

"In the name of democracy". This reveals that this is not a truly libertarian speech. It's a progressive speech.
