View Full Version : Magnetic Car Signs: How fast can you go?

I got two magnetic car signs from Ron Paul store. They hold at 35 mph. I wonder are they safe to go on a highway? 65-75mph?

I've never had a problem going on the freeway.

Most magnetic signs are within the wind envelope of the vehicle, and will stay on at expressway speeds. Maybe at extremely fast speeds you'll risk losing them, but I don't think it will happen.

If you're still worried, try a highway first, get up to 50/55, then check to see if its peeling off at all. If not, go faster, get on the expressway, and keep an eye on them for a little while.

You are much more likely to lose them when your vehicle is parked.

I've been wondering the exact same thing and have yet to purchase because of this concern. Anyone care to tube their magnets cruising on the interstate?

They hold at very high speeds if applied to a proper location.

Heck, just get a normal bumper sticker. I have two on my geo tracker. The thing is such a complete PILE that they are probably helping hold it together on the freeway.

They stay on the side of a car at 65-70 mph. If you are going to drive faster take them off; NOT because they may fall off, but because you don't want to be the asshole driving 90 mph in and out of traffic with RP 2012 on your car. You'll just make people hate all of us. ;)

And you're from NJ? 90 MPH would be holding up traffic on the NJ Turnpike.

yeah funny you say that:) when i have my ron paul magnets on. I drive extra careful:) though i did do the open highway(no one was around) test on my magnets and with the magnet 100% against the metal on both back side doors. They didn't have an issue at 90.

Part of why I'm happy to live in a small town. Anyhow to whom 90 mph is "too slow" needs to seriously do some prioritizing. I'm almost NEVER in a hurry, and that's the way I like it.

When I'm going 65 on a New Jersey highway, I call that traffic. So does everyone around me.

Same goes for Southern California. Then again our freeways only see two speeds... 95 mph or 5 mph.

Like others have said there are no issues with them coming off at high speeds, but make sure to take them off if you know you are going to be in a rush.

To each their own.

Couldn't pay me enough to have ANY desire to live in a place like that.

I don't have on this time, but had one on my truck and one on my wife's car in 2008, and they stayed on for months at all speeds.

My wife and I both have magnets and only take them off when we wash the cars.

Make sure that they have good contact and you should be alright. We lost one on an interstate trip, but I believe it was because of the positioning of the magnet and the body contour of the car. Someone on I-20 between Birmingham and Charleston now has a RP2012 magnet:)

Last Friday I finished a 500 mile trip averaging 65+ and no problems with my 2012 RP magnets. I do notice the hotter it is, the better they form to the door. When you remove them, lay them flat, otherwise the corners could flap up. I always put them on after I wash my car, and wash the magnets every time I wash my car.

+rep for excellent tips. I am feeling more confident in purchasing a pair after the feedback in this thread.

I think at higher speeds a side panels and the roof are in a low pressure/drag area. Shouldn't be a problem

Exactly. There's no traffic where I live, and almost everyone obeys the speed limit. I know, crazy, huh? People just don't have to worry about getting caught in 65mph traffic, lol.

Sometimes I feel like I have to remind myself every second that they are on there and visible to others... so I don't do something stupid. Ideally, when you think about it, drive the exact speed limit in the center lane of a 3 lane highway, and let the +5mph'ers pass you at 70 on either side, while seeing the RP2012 magnets is perfect. Assuming you wear them in pairs, as I do.

I lived in a not-too-big town in NC for a while. On two separate occasions I saw a car sitting at a red light. The light went green and the car never went through the intersection. It was if that green light just wasn't going to work for them, they'd wait for another one. It baffled my mind. If you have nowhere to be, why are you driving your car?

Yeah, that doesn't make much sense. But then, in my town (35,000 or so, I guess) I regularly see people blow right through red lights without even so much as slowing down, and that makes even less.
