Local news was reporting it first and now it is being picked up by some national outlets. Not sure if there is any truth to it or if it is just people freaking out and imagining things.

When i was a small kid my mom would tell me about the leaning tower of piza, she'd call it the leaning tower of pizza though, and explain to me how it was leaning because half of it was standing on the crust, while the rest was on the soft toppings part and for the longest time i actually believed that :D

You do. Most of DC was built on a swamp and in the area where the monument is located there are tons of tunnels that were built to encase small rivers and streams as well as 19th century open sewers.

Apparently the reports are true....

The D.C. parks service has hired this woman to steady the monument until proper repairs can be made.

Breaking news: Obama interrupts his Martha's Vineyard golfing to announce that the Washington DC earthquake occurred on an obscure faultline that runs under the White House and is known as "Bush's Fault." He also promises to have a solution soon...

In all seriousness, there appears to be a crack in the structure and it is now closed until further notice:

matt collins, you still sound like you are being a character, even though you just posted a straighforward
old school news story that has echoes of the NY times's better prose! how can a joker be thought serious?

After reports of the Washington Monument possibly leaning due to a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Virginia Tuesday, the National Park Services has revealed an inspection found cracks in the stones at the top of the Monument. The NPS released a statement after completing a secondary inspection that structural engineers will evaluate the cracks Wednesday to determine the best way to repair the Monument before reopening it to the public. The Washington Monument grounds have been reopened except for an area about 100 feet outside of the plaza. The initial reports of the Monument leaning due to the earthquake have previously been called false by U.S. Park officials.

+infinity. That phallic symbol of centralized government and imperialism will not be missed (nor will the other buildings there).

They'd only build something new, a ziggurat for the military dictator, where he can pewpew lasers at any country from the top of it.
