State police: Woman shot in arm by Texico officer

Sunday, Aug 21 2011, 8:29 pm

http://www.cnjonline.com/news/police-44663-texico-broom.html

A Texico woman is in stable condition after police say she was shot in the arm early Sunday morning by a Texico police officer responding to a possible burglary call.

State Police Lt. Matt Broom said Lisa Salguero, 31, was shot in the arm just after midnight by Officer Richard Peterson during an altercation at 409 Katherine Ave.

Salguero’s attorney, Dan Lindsey, said Salguero called police to her home because she thought a window at her residence had been tampered with.

Peterson has been placed on paid administrative leave following the shooting, according to Texico Police Chief Doug Bowman.

Bowman referred further inquires on the case to state police.

Records show Texico police were dispatched to the residence for a report of a burglary about 12:16 a.m. When Peterson arrived at the residence, Broom said an altercation occurred and, “the female was shot one time in the arm.”

State police were called to the scene to investigate around 12:30 a.m., Broom said.

He said there was no one located at the scene in reference to the reported burglary.

Broom declined to comment on what led to the shooting, citing an ongoing investigation and said as of Monday, no charges had been filed in connection with the incident.

He said Peterson is cooperating with the police investigation.

Lindsey said his office is conducting its own investigation into the shooting, however Texico police have declined his requests to speak with him.

“We’re assuming it was an accident, but we’re not sure because he’s (Peterson’s) not cooperating with our investigation,” he said.

“She was unarmed. She didn’t have anything in her hand. She just opened the door to talk to the officer and he shot her,” Lindsey said.

Salguero remained hospitalized Monday at Plains Regional Medical Center, Broom said.

Salguero has had surgery and is recovering, according to Lindsey.

Reaffirms my long-held opinion that no matter how dire the situation, it can always be made worse by adding a cop.

Hmmmm . . . you know I could REALLY cut down my workload if everytime one of my clients asked me for help I shot him. Even if I just winged him, word would get around. This is genius!!!

Of course you would go out of business pretty fast too. It's a wonder people call the cops anymore, knowing they will probably just muck up the works worse than if they hadn't called them in the first place.

At least she survived, but getting shot in the arm is potentially more serious than some might at first think. We're talking about a .40 S&W or even a .357 Sig (Source: http://www.realpolice.net/forums/firearms-4/22684-agency-issue-very-long-3.html) with a high quality hollow point bullet. Whatever it hits, especially bone, is gonna get pretty screwed up.

Permanent muscle, tendon, and especially nerve and circulation problems will likely result - not to mention aesthetics and psychological trauma.

Yes, this is what happens when you call the cops.

Yep... it's nothing to sneeze at. I recall one guy who got hit with a .45 Federal 230gr Hydra-Shok in the leg and it nearly took it off... shattering the femur and causing substantial muscular damage.

Yup. Remember that school teacher who was trying to fake a shooting attack so she could sue the school? She shot herself in the shoulder, thinking it would be just a minor wound. Ha! Watching too much TV I guess. I'll see if I can find the story.

Just out of curiosity, Anti-Federalist - how do you find these stories?

This one was sent to me in a PM by fellow RPF member flightlesskiwi.

I get some stories like that from more than a couple of forum regulars like me.

I search three websites:

Lew Rockwell's blog http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/

The Agitator http://www.theagitator.com/

Injustice Everywhere http://www.injusticeeverywhere.com/

Then I use three search terms for the past 24 hours in google news:

Police shoot man
Police taser man
Police shoot dog

That's about it, and that's the scary part, I don't search very hard.

Then there some stories that just pop up elsewhere that catch my eye while looking for something else.

My purpose in posting these stories is three fold:

1 - As a cautionary tale about dealing with cops, or any government entity for that matter. Be very careful about what you say and do, and try to avoid such interaction in the first place.

2 - As an indicator of how little the state thinks of us mere mundanes and to clarify that these are not usually cases of "bad apples" but are rather indications of system wide disregard for the rights of citizens.

3 - As a warning of worse things that are to come.

Contrary to what some people may think, my purpose is not just to simply "bash cops" because I don't like them.

If that was the case, I could be posting the thousands of stories I've seen regarding personal malfeasances of cops, drunkenness, battery, rape, child abuse etc.

ROGERS, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas State Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a woman by police officers at a Rogers convenience store.

According to a news release, three officers responded to a harassment call at the Shell Superstop about 10:37 a.m. Monday when the woman allegedly threatened them with a knife.

The Benton County coroner pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Her name wasn't released, pending notification of next of kin.

The officers who were involved in the shooting are on administrative leave.

Just curious, whenever I see an ambulance in neighborhood, I almost always see police vehicle (or two). Does a 911 call for medical assistance result in dispatch of police as well? Hard to avoid then in such situation?

Yup, sadly.

Posted more than a couple stories where people called 911 for medical assistance, got cops instead, who then proceeded to arrest, taser, beat or shoot everybody in sight.

Another lesson to NEVER call the cops unless your life is immediate danger (in which case there is a chance the cops will still aggress against you).
