Couples can donate $5000 jointly.

2500 for the primary and 2500 for the general, I assume. Awfully presumptuous of them both if that's the case.

You can also donate $5000 now, but $2500 goes to the GE. If they don't make they refund it. .

Signs of desperation.

Top Tier Tim Pawlenty tried to pull that trick. I guess he'll have to keep a few staffers on for a while, to send the refunds.

This might be a low blow, but given Bachmann's views on submissive wives, and Gingrich's marital history, I suspect they believe the man speaks for the household ;)

From Bachmann's website:

We have begun building our team and your donation of $25, $50, $100 or any amount up to the $2,500 legal limit (primary and general election), for a total of $5,000 will get my campaign off to a great start. Your generous support is greatly appreciated at this critical stage in my campaign.

First off, married couples can donate $5,000, which amounts to them each giving the campaign $2,500. However that is not the case here, as the quote shows above.

However, raising moneys for both the primary and general at the same time is also legal. FEC law allows a treasurer to redesignate a contribution for the general election if the contribution exceeds the limits for the primary election. Here is a part of the law pertaining to this:

(B) Notwithstanding paragraph (b)(5)(ii)(A) of this section or any
other provision of this section, the treasurer of the recipient
authorized political committee may treat all or part of the
amount of the contribution that exceeds the contribution limits in
paragraph (b)(1) of this section as made with respect to the general
election, provided that:
(1) The contribution was made before the primary election;
(2) The contribution was not designated for a particular election;
(3) The contribution would exceed the limitation on contributions
set forth in paragraph (b)(1) of this section if it were treated as a
contribution made for the primary election;
(4) Such redesignation would not cause the contributor to exceed any
of the limitations on contributions set forth in paragraph (b)(1) of
this section; --110.1(b)(5)(ii)(B)

They can't spend the excess 2500 until the general election though.
