Something I wrote for the Manhattan Young Republicans...not finalized yet.

Ron Paul: The True Conservative?
By Avery J. Knapp Jr., M.D.

Some say Ron Paul is crazy. I think they're right. He must be crazy to refuse to participate in the lucrative congressional pension, and never have taken a congressional-paid junket1. He returns a portion of his congressional budget back to the government every year. If I were in Congress, I would be very tempted to live the good life, and not heat my own soup up every day as Dr. Paul does (because lobbyists don't bother taking Dr. Paul out to lunch)2.

Ron Paul's a libertarian, not a conservative, right? “If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism...The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.3” Two hints to who said this: he used to be President of these United States, and he has a remarkably similar first name to Dr. Paul's.

Some say Ron Paul supporters are liberals. They're right, some are. Some are Reagan Democrats. Some supporters are classical liberals, some are true conservatives, and many are independents now drawn to the Republican party. He's the only candidate increasing the size and strength of the Republican party even more than Hillary Clinton.

Ron Paul is the true conservative...the champion of the Constitution, the fusion candidate of fiscal and social conservatism4. In his 10 terms in Congress, he has worked tirelessly and voted consistently for limited constitutional government, low taxes, free markets, a balanced budget, and a return to sound monetary principles. He has delivered over 4000 babies, and is the strongest of pro-life and pro-2nd amendment candidates.

Dr. Paul is opposed to nation building and policing the world. He's running on a similar foreign policy as that of G.W. Bush's 1999 rhetoric of a humble foreign policy and no nation building, and he will follow the same foreign policy of “Mr. Republican”, Robert Taft. Ron Paul, a former Air Force flight surgeon, is a true American patriot and believes 100% in a strong national defense. Ron Paul knows that we can best defend our country by securing our own borders here rather than securing Iraq's borders and policing the world.

Ron Paul doesn't have a chance, right? Vegas oddsmakers give him up to a 1:6 chance of winning5. He's trading on intrade.com, a prediction market website, at over 8% and climbing dramatically6. He has the third most amount of money to spend in the Republican Primary, and has tremendous true grassroots and netroots support7. Surprising the political world by raising over $5 million in the third quarter, his support is increasing dramatically8. He has an excellent chance to win New Hampshire, and according to Joe Trippi, “Ron Paul is doing much better than his better-known opponents think he is doing.9” Tucker Carlson10, George Will11, Bill Maher12, Pat Buchanan13,14, and Barry Goldwater Jr. support him15. I'm voting for the current father of conservatism. RonPaul2008.com.

The term "conservative", when applied to government, means that the government does as little as possible or only what's necessary to fulfill it's obligations to the people.

The term "libertarian" describes what most people are: They don't want the government or any other institution, or individual, to tell them how to live.

America was founded as a country of libertarian individuals with a conservative government. That is why Ron Paul is gaining so much support. He is a true libertarian individual who wants to restore a true conservative government.

People are sick of what we have today; a socialist authoritarian government which is diametrically opposed to individual liberty.
