I got the email about becoming a delegate in NY and I'm not sure what to do. How does this delegate thing work? Each candidates gets a certain number of delegates and the people vote for the delegates? Does anybody know where the NY convention is? Is there any reason to believe that RP will having any trouble getting all of his delegates in NY? I would love to be a delegate and support the cause, but I'm not sure I can deal with traveling and staying over and the cost. It doesn't help that I have had a migraine all day. I just don't feel like I am up to dealing with the whole thing. Do they really need me, particularly, to become a delegate. If so, I will, but there won't be a problem finding delegate I don't want to do it. advise please.

Hi, first of all, it would help to get the proper lingo down: you were probably asked to be a Ron Paul "delegate candidate" to be on his slate. Voters then choose the delegates from among the competing slates of delegate candidates. NY has a primary, there is no convention as part of the delegate selection process (other states with caucuses are different).

There is a subforum dedicated to these kinds of question and answers.

It is very possible that the campaign needs you to be a delegate candidate for them so that Dr. Paul can appear on the ballot. I am having the worst time filling our slate here in DC. Some friends and neighbors have agreed to be on our slate as a personal favor to me but probably couldn't make it to the convention anyway. If we don't fill out our slate we can't even START to circulate petitions to get Dr. Paul on the ballot (and all else is for naught).

There are processes to substitute people later. Also, you could request to be an "alternate delegate candidate" instead of a "delegate candidate" if that makes it easier for you.
