Five months. That's how far removed we are from the Iowa caucus. You know, the poll that actually matters. The one with actual delegates. After the euphoria of Michele Bachmann's win wears off, she will be faced with the reality that she's peaked way too soon. We, however, are in a stronger position than we've ever been before.

Here's the break down:

1) If Ron Paul had won the straw poll yesterday, his opponents would be doing everything in their power over the next five months to make sure he doesn't win the caucus. Instead, it's Bachmann's face on the dart board. Her opponents will be doing everything they can to tear her down, and the supporters she loses have a good chance of coming over to our side. After she peaks in the polls from this win, she has nowhere to go but down. We're right behind her, and have nowhere to go but up.

2) While Bachmann supporters may grow complacent over the next several months, thinking an Iowa win for her is inevitable, Ron Paul supporters will not. We'll be damned if we lose the Iowa Caucus by a handful of votes like we did the straw poll, and will turn out in record numbers.

3) The official campaign's organization and professionalism yesterday was second to none. They proved that they have what it takes to put us in a position to win.

4) In five months, people won't be going to see Randy Travis. It will be the issues that will drive people to vote, and it is there that we have an advantage.

While it stings to see Bachmann on the front page of all the newspapers this morning, knowing that we were 152 votes away from that being Ron Paul, we have to think long term. The truth is that a razor-thin second place showing is a blessing in disguise. Over five months, many will start to have buyer's remorse over yesterday's winner, and if we come from behind and win the caucus, it will have that much more staying power in New Hampshire and beyond.

I think this is spin, but somewhat correct spin. I don't really think you can argue that second is better than winning. But we are certainly still in a good position.

The official campaign is already behind the eight ball and was running ID programs to look for new supporters the last couple of weeks instead of doing GOTV. Their professionalism and organization can be questioned.

Get out the vote for the straw poll. Get buses, car pools etc. It is clear there was not enough. Bachmann's last minute effort trumped Paul's tested campaign machine which has had four years to plan and execute.
